COMPUTER SIMULATION OP FRANK LOOP CONTRAST IN FIELD IONIMAGES

Description: A computer model for simulation of the image contrast caused by Frank dislocation loops in field ion tips of fcc materials is presented. The model is based on the shell model for ion image simulation, whereas the displacement field of Frank loops is computed from the exact displacement equation for a closed dislocation loop in an isotropically elastic continuum. A method for taking surface effects into account by superposition of the displacement field of an image loop is introduced. The result… more

Extrude Hone deburring with X-base media

Description: Small precision mechanisms must have burr-free, sharp-edged parts to operate well. Controlling the size of burrs can lower burr removal costs and improve edge repeatability. Study results indicated that with conventional tooling approaches, Extrude Hone deburring with x-base media removes more material from the hole than desired and is less repeatable than required on precision miniature parts. With this media, the process is most applicable to precision miniature parts with burrs less than 25.… more

DISTRIBUTION OF RADIOACTIVE JACKRABBIT PELLETS IN THE VICINITY OF THE B-C CRIBS, 200 EAST AREA U.S.A.E.C. HANFORD RESERVATION

Description: During 1972 and 1973 a study was conducted in the B-C Cribs, 200 East Area, to learn the extent to which jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) and their predators had dispersed buried radioactive wastes in their fecal pellets and scats. The specific objective was to gather sufficient data on the pattern of dispersal so that statistically valid sampling strategies could be developed in future programs, depending upon management planning objectives for the area. A secondary objective was to relate the… more

Radiological evaluations for advanced waste management studies

Description: The overall risk evaluation for various radioactive waste management concepts includes calculation of radiation doses to individuals and local populations. Radiation doses are the most appropriate measure of the consequences of unforeseen releases of radioactive materials to the environment and dose criteria are available by which the severity may be judged. A comprehensive dose computational model, developed and used for other Atomic Energy Commission studies, has been adopted to improve its f… more

Development of MC2730 RTG thermopile side contact attachment process

Description: Gold plated Kovar pads were eutectic bonded to p and n-type SiGe specimens using a 98 wt% AuSi preform alloy. This joining technique was shown to yield strong reliable bonds. A method based on this technique is described for producing bonding pads to the outermost elements of the MC2730 RTG thermopile. (auth)

Argonne Radiological Impact Program (ARIP). Part I. Carcinogenic hazard from low-level, low-rate radiation

Description: The entire Argonne Radiological Impact Program is briefly outlined, and part of the program dealing with radiation hazards from nuclear power plants is discussed in detail. Various models and predictions of carcinogenic hazard are examined and compared with actual experience in U. S. and foreign populations. All of the models predict a significant increment in malignant mortality with increasing background. Observation of the actual populations at risk shows not only no increment, but an actual… more

Evaluation of a high-volume cascade particle impactor system

Description: From American Chemical Society 2nd joint conference on sensing of environmental pollutants; Washington, District of Columbia, USA (10 Dec 1973). Commercially available 20 cfm cascade impactors were evaluated under field sampling conditions for particle sampling bias caused by interstage losses and by non-wind direction sampler oriertation. An integrated sampler using an impactor and a winddirection self-orienting cowl attachment decreased particle sampling bias. (auth)

Publications of LASL research, 1967--1971

Description: This bibiography is a compilation of unclassified publications of work done at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) for the years 1967 through 1971. Papers published in those years are included regardless of when they were actually written. Publications received too late for inclusion in earlier compilations are also included. Declassification of previously classified reports is considered to constitute publication. All classified issuances are omitted. The bibliography includes LASL rep… more

Measurement of the polarization parameter for the reaction $pi$$sup - $p$Yields$$pi$$sup 0$n between 1.03 and 1.79 GeV/c

Description: From 2nd international conference on elementary particles; Aixen- Provence, France (6 Sep 1973). Measurements of the polarization parameter for the reaction pi /sup -/p yields pi /sup o/n were made at the five momenta 1.03, 1.245, 1.44, 1.5 and 1.79 GeV/c. A polarized target was used, with polarizations achieved ranging from 48 to 57%. Salient features of the experiment were the use of neutron counters for time-of-flight measurements as well as angular information and the use of optical spark c… more

Concentrated defects in PuO$sub 2$

Description: From Battelle colloquium on defects in oxides; Columbus, Ohio, USA (17 Sep 1973). The accumulation of concentrated defects in /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/ by selfradiation damage is shown to proceed by a simple exponential function for samples which are initially defect free. Anomalous behavior for both ingrowth and damage recovery is related to helium inventory, but not to uranium, which is the daughter product of the alpha decay. The annealing of samples having achieved a saturation of defects at 25 d… more
