NERVA Program. Operating procedure: cart cooling system, Test Cell A

Description: The instructions described in this procedure are typical of the operation of Test Cell A relative to the KIWI-B4A. Operation of Test Cell A relative to the NRX reactor will require modifications dictated by specific test requirements. Under NRX conditions, it will be the responsibility of the test cell manager to evaluate the capabilities of Test Cell A in terms of given test requirements and then set forth detailed checklists which will be compatible with the test requirements.

Plutonium Nitrate Shipping Investigation

Description: With the AEC complex there has been a long history of shipper-receiver assay differences in the transfer of plutonium nitrate solutions. Since the AEC is considering establishing plutonium nitrate as one of the chemical forms of plutonium for Commission purchase of privately produced plutonium, it is necessary that the shipper-receiver problem be resolved. The program formulated by Rocky Flats for doing this, and the results obtained to date, are discussed. (auth)

Review of Electronic Absorption Spectra of Molten Salts

Description: The results of investigations of electronic absorption spectra of molten salts are reviewed with the primary aim of providing a guide to the literature for those doing experimental research. The period covered is 1916 through mid- 1982, with, however, most of the research concentrated on the period since 1956. Literature citations number 160 and include a large number of references to theoretical articles. The kinds of chromophores treated include transition-metal ions, lanthanide-metal ions, a… more

The Marvel-Schebler Control Rod Drive System Design Review. Final Report

Description: The results and conclusions of a design review of the Marvel-Schebler control rod drive system are presented. The review included studies of mechanical design, electem reliability, system logic, component and logic failures, and system relationship to reactor safety. Work was not completed on the fault analysis, system packaging, and test recommendations. (auth)

QUARTERLY STATUS REPORT ON LAMPRE PROGRAM FOR PERIOD ENDING AUGUST 20, 1963

Description: S>Experiments and operations in LAMPRE are reviewed. Fabrication, properties, and radiation testing of LAMPRE fuel elements are studied. The development of Pu-Co Ce fuels is discussed. Phase studies on Ce-Co, Ce-Ni, Ce- Mn, Pu-La, and Pu-Pr systems are reported. Ta corrosion by Na is examined. The progress in construction of a Core Test Facility is outlined. (T.F.H.)

Heat Capacity Studies of Uranium and Uranium-Fissium Alloys

Description: The heat contents of high-purity uranium and uranium-fissium alloys containing 3, 5, and 8 wt.% fissium were measured at temperatures from 0 deg C through their fusion temperatures. The total heat content above 0 deg C was determined by drop calorimetry and quantitative differential thermal analysis. The total heat content from 0 to 1200 deg C was found to be 16.1 plus or minus 0.3, 16.3 plus or minus 0.6, 16.3 plus or minus 0.6, and 16.4 plus or minus 0.4 kcal per equivalent gram atom, for the… more

Exact Form for Scattering Amplitude in Regge Pole Theory

Description: The exact form for the contribution of a single Regge pole is given both for positive and negative angular momentum without making the usual approximations. This exact form involves Legendre functions of the first and second kind with nonintegral index and argument greater than one. These functions are plotted. A one-parameter fit is made to the high-energy p-p elastic scattering data that give good agreement with experiment. (auth)

THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE CHEMISTRY OF FISSION-PRODUCT ELEMENTS. Summary Report, August 1, 1962-July 31, 1963

Description: The high-temperature chemistry of oxides of ruthenium, palladium, rhondium, and iridium and chlorides of iridium, osmium, rhodium, and ruthenium is discussed with respect to crystal structure, thermodynannic properties, vaporization, formation, and dissociation. (N.W.R.)

Preliminary Analysis of Neutron Elastic Scattering Anisotropy in Tungsten

Description: Based on the angular distribution data contained in the second edition of BNL-400, a preliminary analysis of tungsten was performed. The results of this analysis appear as sets of coefficients (which describe the degree of anisotropy in the elastic scattering of neutrons by tungsten) and a series of curves which help illustrate the analysis.
