Grain Refinement of Uranium by Alloying

Description: Binary alloys of uranium with 38 elements in the range 0.01 to 1.0 at.% were made. Three alloys having nominal compositions of 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 at.% were made with most of the elements, and in addition, 12 ternary and quaternary alloys were made. The alloys were cast, rolled to 7/8-inch-diameter bars, heat treated, and examined for grain size.

Jacketing of Uranium for High-Temperture Service

Description: From introduction: "The work covered in this report is a portion of the experimental research undertaken for the design of a uranium-containing metallic fuel rod for operation in air at 1090 C...This report deals with that phase which involved the testing and evaluation of various metals as barrier costs between uranium alloys, and low-carbon steel. The work is of a preliminary nature and is concerned more with a comparison of the various barrier metals than with the acquisition of numerical da… more

The Constitution Diagram of Uranium-Rich Uranium-Molybdenum Alloys

Description: The colybdenum-uranium equilibrium diagram has been studied, and the results are presented up to 50 atomic per cent molybdenum. Additions of molybdenum raise the melting point of uranium, forming a peritectic at about 1285 C. The solubility of molybdenum in gamma uranium is extensive. It decreases from 42 atomic per cent at the peritect temperature to 30 per cent at lower temperatures. Allots of about 28 to 30 per cent molybdenum content have been found to contain a metastable gamma. It can be … more

Direct Measurements of Skin Friction

Description: "A device has been developed to measure local skin friction on a flat plate by measuring the force exerted upon a very small movable part of the surface of the flat plate. These forces, which range from about 1 milligram to about 100 milligrams, are measured by means of a reactance device. The apparatus was first applied to measurements in the low-speed range, both for laminar and turbulent boundary layers. The device was then applied to high-speed subsonic flow and the turbulent-skin-friction … more

Metallurgy Division Quarterly Progress Report for Period Ending January 31, 1951

Description: The stability and corrosion resistance of thorium exposed to eutectic NaK were investigated. Satisfactory results on thorium tube or rod fabrication by means of extrusion were obtained. Rolling and swaging thorium presented no difficulty but drawing proved unsuccessful. Strainhardening values of iodide thorium were about half of those of Ames thorium. The fubrication of unanium tubing by extrusion was successful in the alpha but not in the gamma nange. By increasing the extrusion ratio, an incr… more

Determination of half life of polonium-210 by counting: final report

Description: Introduction: "A number of determination have been made of the half life of polonium-210 by calorimetry. Counting affords an entirely different method of determining half lives and requires only a small amount of activity. Therefore for comparison a half-life determination by counting was undertaken with a sample of approximately 0.5 millicurie of polonium."

Exploratory Studies of Hydrazine Formation by Radioactive Ionization

Description: The production yields of hydrazine by various ionization methods are compared. The maximum value of M/N (number of molecules reacting per ion pairs) for electric discharge was 0.25 and for beta particles on liquid ammonia, M/N = 0.31. A 1-Mev reactor could produce 1.6 kg of hydrazine per hour if M/N = 0.04 as determined by alpha particles on liquid ammonia. About 300 ev of energy were needed to form a hydrazine molecule. (C.J.G.)
