Development of a High Velocity Solid Particle Launcher for Laboratory Erosion Studies. [Reentry Vehicle Heat Shields]

Description: A solid particle launcher for laboratory erosion studies has been developed and successfully demonstrated. Performance of the launcher is predicted by a two-dimensional, time-dependent theoretical analysis to within the experimental uncertainty. The present device accelerates 100 μm diameter glass spheres to velocities of 2.1+/- 0.6 km/sec. The system is safe, reliable, and has a test repetition of about 2 shots/hour.

Project development plan for East Mesa Geothermal Test Center

Description: Plans for a test facility for geothermal energy systems and components designed for moderate temperature/low salinity geothermal fluids available at the East Mesa site in the Imperial Valley of California are discussed. Details of the following phases of development are given: technical plan; management plan; procurement and contracting plan; technology transfer and utilization plan; and resource requirements. (JGB)

Relativistic kinematics

Description: This memo is an expansion of an informal memo prepared for the Table on Relativistic Kinematics first appearing in the 1974 edition of the ''Review of Particle Properties,'' Particle Data Group, Phys. Lett. 50B, April 1974. The formulas that appeared in the table on pages 20 to 23 are demonstrated. New formulas are presented as well. Finally, an updated table is given.

Kinetic study of the reaction of plutonium(IV) with hydroxylamine

Description: The kinetics of the one-equivalent reduction of plutonium(IV) with a large excess of hydroxylamine in nitric acid solution was studied. The form of the experimental rate law implies that a multi-step reaction mechanism is involved. Using the equilibrium-steady-state approximation, a rate law with the above form can be derived from a mechanism in which the reduction reaction rapidly approaches equilibrium with the reverse reaction. As this equilibrium is neared, the rate-controlling step becomes… more

Cost comparison of very high temperature nuclear reactors for process heat applications

Description: In April 1974, the United States Atomic Energy Commission (USAEC) authorized General Atomic Company, General Electric Company and Westinghouse Astronuclear Laboratory to assess the available technology for producing process heat utilizing very high temperature nuclear reactors. General Electric and Westinghouse produced concepts for the entire nuclear system, including the balance of plant. The General Atomic assessment included only the nuclear reactor portion of the nuclear plant. United Engi… more

Geothermal resource utilization: paper and cane sugar industries. Final report

Description: This study was made as a specific contribution to an overall report by the United States in the area of industrial utilization of geothermal resources. This is part of an overall study in non-electrical uses of geothermal resources for a sub-committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This study was restricted to the geopressured zone along the Northern Gulf of Mexico Coast. Also, it was limited to utilizing the thermal energy of this ''geoenergy'' resource for process use in the Pulp … more

Mound Laboratory Plutonium-238 Study Off-Site Analytical Data May-December 1974

Description: Preliminary samples collected from off-site sediment in the Miami-Erie Canal Area near Mound Laboratory indicated that plutonium-238 concentrations are substantially above baseline levels. As a result an extensive sampling and analysis program was performed to determine the plutonium-238 concentrations as a function of depth and location in a drainage ditch, the canal, two ponds, a run-off hollow, a canal overflow creek and the Great Miami River. The plutonium-238 concentration data was used to… more
