Innovative technology demonstrations

Description: Currently, several innovative technologies are being demonstrated at Tinker Air Force Base (TAFB) to address specific problems associated with remediating two contaminated test sites at the base. Cone penetrometer testing (CPT) is a form of testing that can rapidly characterize a site. This technology was selected to evaluate its applicability in the tight clay soils and consolidated sandstone sediments found at TAFB. Directionally drilled horizontal wells have been successfully installed at th… more

Coal liquefaction process streams characterization and evaluation

Description: This study was designed to demonstrate the use of two different methods for the separation of direct coal liquefaction process- derived materials into defined fractions. The two methods, liquid chromatography (LC) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), were employed to determine if the same or complementary information could be obtained by the two methods. The primary objective was to evaluate the potential of supplementing or replacing the conventional LC method with SFE and in so doing to … more

Novel nanodispersed coal liquefaction catalysts: Molecular design via microemulsion-based synthesis

Description: The objective of this project is to pursue the development of highly dispersed and inexpensive catalysts for improved coal solubilization and upgrading of coal liquids. A novel study of the synthesis of liquefaction catalysts of nanometer size will be carried out. It is based on the molecular design of reverse micelles (microemulsions). These surfactant-stabilized, metal-bearing microdrops offer unique opportunities for synthesizing very small particles by providing a cage-like effect that limi… more

Control of pyrite surface chemistry in physical coal cleaning

Description: To better understand the surface chemical properties of coal and mineral pyrite, studies on the effect of flotation surfactants (frother and kerosene) on the degree of hydrophobicity have been conducted. The presence of either frother or kerosene enhanced the flotability of coal and mineral pyrite with a corresponding decrease in induction time over the pH range examined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicate a correlation exists between the sample surface morphology and crystal s… more

Nonlinear, distortive phenomena in solids: Martensitic, crack, and multiscale structures

Description: This ongoing program, from the beginning of the first three year grant 1988--1991 and now in the first year of the second phase 1991--1994, has been directed at developing both an understanding of the physics underlying structural transformations in real (alloy) materials as well as new theoretical methods which adequately describe the large (nonlinear) distortions which characterize such processes. We have had a particular interest in martensitic systems, first (1988--1991) in the equilibrium … more

Control of catalytic hydrotreating selectivity with ammonia. [Hydrodeoxygenation]

Description: The hydrogenation of naphthalene in the presence of 0, 24, or 48 kPa of ammonia derived from propyl amine was studied during the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of dibenzofuran (DBF). A new sample of sulfided NiMo/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} catalyst at 360{degrees}C, 6.9 MPa total H{sub 2} pressure in a vapor phase tubular reactor was used. As a base-line the HDO of DBF was also studied in the absence of both naphthalene and ammonia. Ammonia inhibited both the HDO of dibenzofuran and the hydrogenation of napht… more

RF voltage modulation at discrete frequencies with applications to crystal channeling extraction

Description: RF voltage modulation at a finite number of discrete frequencies is described in a Hamiltonian resonance framework. The theory is applied to the problem of parasitic extraction of a fixed target beam from a high energy proton collider, using a bent crystal as a thin septum'' within an effective width of about one micron. Three modes of employment of discrete resonances are proposed.First, a single relatively strong static drive'' resonance may be used to excite a test proton so that it will pen… more

Public acceptability of the use of gamma rays from spent nuclear fuel as a hazardous waste treatment process

Description: Three methods were used to estimate public reaction to the use of gamma irradiation of hazardous wastes as a hazardous waste treatment process. The gamma source of interest is spent nuclear fuel. The first method is Benefit-Risk Decision Making, where the benefits of the proposed technology are compared to its risks. The second analysis compares the proposed technology to the other, currently used nuclear technologies and estimates public reaction based on that comparison. The third analysis is… more

Locked modes and magnetic field errors in MST

Description: In the MST reversed field pinch magnetic oscillations become stationary (locked) in the lab frame as a result of a process involving interactions between the modes, sawteeth, and field errors. Several helical modes become phase locked to each other to form a rotating localized disturbance, the disturbance locks to an impulsive field error generated at a sawtooth crash, the error fields grow monotonically after locking (perhaps due to an unstable interaction between the modes and field error), a… more
