A novel process for manufacture of methanol

Description: A bench-scale reactor is being used to conduct studies of the conversion of synthesis gas to methanol by a novel process. During the last quarter, the effect of potassium methoxide and Cu-chromite loading on the MeOH formation rate was investigated. The rate obtained with Cu-chromite was compared to that using Cu-ZnO as catalyst. Work also continued on the modification of the experimental equipment to permit on-line monitoring of liquid and gas compositions.

Control of energetic ion confinement by ion cyclotron range of frequency waves

Description: It is shown that ICRF waves can induce fast convective radial transport of energetic ions in a tokamak geometry without affecting the background ion transport. Spatially inhomogeneous ICRF waves with directional parallel wave vectors are needed; otherwise, a net parallel flow of the energetic ions has to be present. 8 refs.

Development of alternative oxygen production source using a zirconia solid electrolyte membrane

Three-dimensional contaminant plume dynamics in the vadose zone: Simulation of the 241-T-106 single-shell tank leak at Hanford

Description: Approximately 2,000 m{sup 3} of liquid containing radioactive and chemical wastes leaked from the 241-T-106 single-shell tank at the Hanford Site. The leak discharged into the unsaturated, coarse-grained sediments of the Hanford formation which underlie the base of the tank. Critical heat flux concerns during the flow instability phase of a DEGB LOCA

Description: Arguments are presented that support the proposal that a separate burnout risk analysis, for the Flow Instability (FI) phase of a LOCA, not be required for reactor restart. With expected reactor power limits, flow instability will occur before critical heat flux (CHF). Simulations of plasma performance in a beam-driven tokamak fusion reactor with Q approx 2-3

Description: Supershot profiles were used to simulate plasmas in a neutral-beam driven tokamak reactor designed to achieve fusion energy production with Q {approx} 2-3. Profiles from a TFTR supershot were scaled to larger radii, density, and electron temperature. The TRANSP code was used to calculate performance of these plasmas. Theoretical approach for enhanced mass transfer effects in-duct flue gas desulfurization processes

Description: Bench-scale and pilot-scale experiments have been conducted to measure the mass transfer and kinetic rates at simulated duct injection conditions. Mechanism for the selective conjugation of ubiquitin to phytochrome
