Enhanced Durability and Reactivity for Zinc Ferrite Desulfurization Sorbent

Description: AMAX Research Development Center (AMAX R D) has been investigating methods for enhancing the reactivity and durability of the zinc ferrite desulfurization sorbent. Zinc ferrite sorbents are intended for use in desulfurization of hot coal gas in integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) or molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) applications. For the present program, the reactivity of the sorbent may be defined as its sulfur sorption capacity at the breakthrough point and at saturation in a bench-… more

Variations in volatiles in magma bodies based on studies of melt inclusions

Description: Knowledge of volatile concentrations in magmas are important in the prediction of explosive volcanism, and contribute to the understanding of the carbon dioxide budget of the atmosphere. Some important variables that are controlled by volatiles are: crystallization temperature of phases, composition of liquids minimum, and viscosity. Volatiles are also catalysts for reactions.

Mechanisms governing fine particulate emissions from coal flames

Description: The overall objective of this project is to provide a basic understanding of the principal processes that govern fine particulate formation in pulverized coal flames. This understanding is to be sued to develop a model (or models) which will predict the yield and size distribution of fine particulate matter as a function of coal type, coal processing, and combustion conditions. The goal of the model is to provide an engineering tool that will enable the practitioner to estimate the consequences… more

L-star pulsed coal combustor for residential space heating

Description: This quarter, substantial improvement in the coal carbon conversion was achieved. Specifically, for a scaled-down version of the residential combustor, coal carbon conversions exceeding 97 percent were realized, when utilizing methane as carrier gas for the coal. Design changes include insulation of the combustor, introduction of a flame holder, combustion air preheat and presence of an obstructing plate at the combustor exhaust port. Only the first two changes contributed towards substantial i… more

Results of the radiological survey at 5 Branca Court, Lodi, New Jersey (LJ039)

Description: Maywood Chemical Works (MCW) of Maywood, New Jersey, generated process wastes and residues associated with the production and refining of thorium and thorium compounds from monazite ores from 1916 to 1956. MCW supplied rare earth metals and thorium compounds to the Atomic Energy Commission and various other government agencies from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s. Area residents used the sandlike waste from this thorium extraction process mixed with tea and cocoa leaves as mulch in their yards.… more

Establishment and maintenance of a coal sample bank and data base

Description: Data from both instruments indicate that atmospheric oxygen is leaking into the primary and secondary containers. The methods and containers tested cannot maintain an inert atmosphere over the long term. The actual percentage of oxygen in the containers is thought to be influenced by several factors: (1) Flushing with argon by any method only displaces part (50 to 80%) of the atmospheric air present in the container after it is filled with coal. Because the atmosphere may not be homogeneous, an… more

Alfven wave stability in D-III-D

Description: Within the framework of the global Alfven eigenmode theory in a cylindrical background plasma, I examine the excitation of global Alfven eigenmodes by intense neutral beam injection in the D III-D tokamak operating at General Atomics. I have considered two separate sets of experimental conditions, a low power'' set of cases using 10MW of hydrogen beams, and a high power'' shot of 20MW of deuterium beams. My results are particularly sensitive to the background density profile. For parabolic back… more

Cycle-life improvement of Zn/NiOOH cells by the addition of Ca(OH) sub 2 to the zinc electrode

Description: The addition of Ca(OH){sub 2} to the zinc electrode of Zn/NiOOH cells was investigated in order to determine its effect on reducing the rate of Zinc redistribution. Cells containing 0, 10, 25, and 40 mol% Ca(OH){sub 2} in the zinc electrode were constructed and tested. Ca(OH){sub 2} was found to form a calcium zincate complex with the zincate-supersaturated KOH solution created during the discharge half-cycle. As Ca(OH){sub 2} is insoluble in the electrolyte, the formation of this complex (cont… more

Mechanisms governing fine particulate emissions from coal flames

Description: During this reporting period the global experiments were concluded. The final activities under these experiments involved measuring mineral content of coals as a function of coal particle size. The principal activities during this quarter involved the mechanistic experiments. Three baseline coals were cleaned and two of these sized. The ash from these various cuts were sampled from a bench scale reactor. The ash size distributions were compared to distributions predicted by the breakup model.

Yttria-stabilized zirconia solid oxide electrolyte fuel cells, monolithic solid oxide fuel cells

Description: Small cell size, thin ceramic components, and high operating temperature are the key features of the MSOFC. The small size of individual cells in the monolithic structure increases the active surface area. For example, an MSOFC with channels about 1 mm in diameter has a ratio of active surface area to volume of about 9.4 sq cm/cu cm. This is about seven times the ratio for conventional fuel cells. On this basis alone, an MSOFC with a channel diameter of 1 mm should produce the same power as a c… more
