Dynamic modeling of transport and positional control of tokamaks

Description: We describe here a numerical model of a free boundary axisymmetric tokamak plasma and its associated control systems. The plasma is modeled with a hybrid method using two-dimensional velocity and flux functions with surface-averaged MHD equations describing the evolution of the adiabatic invariants. Equations are solved for the external circuits and for the effects of eddy currents in nearby conductors. Ion transport in stellarators

Description: Stellarator ion transport in the low-collisionality regime with a radial electric field is calculated by a systematic expansion of the drift-Boltzmann equation. The shape of the helical well is taken into account in this calculation. It is found that the barely trapped ions with three to four times the thermal energy give the dominant contribution to the diffusion. Expressions for the ion particle and energy fluxes are derived.

Radiological assessment report for the Lansdowne property, 105-107 East Stratford Avenue, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, October-December 1984

Description: Areas with elevated levels of radioactivity were found throughout both residences, as well as on the surrounding property. Contamination was also found in the garage behind the 105 East structure. The 105 East residence had substantially more contamination than the 107 East residence, as was expected. Mineralogy in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) facility stratigraphic horizon

Preliminary measurements of gamma ray effects on characteristics of broad-band GaAs field-effect transistor preamplifiers

Description: The effect of gamma radiation on electrical characteristics of cryogenically cooled broad-band low-noise microwave preamplifiers has been preliminarily evaluated. The change in the gain and noise figure of a 1-2 GHz preamplifier using GaAs microwave transistors was determined at gamma doses between 10/sup 5/ rad to 5 /times/ 10/sup 8/ rad. The gain and noise figure was measured at ambient temperatures of 300 K and 80 K. 8 refs., 2 figs.

Bounce-averaged Fokker-Planck code for stellarator transport

Description: A computer code for solving the bounce-averaged Fokker-Planck equation appropriate to stellarator transport has been developed, and its first applications made. Confinement scaling and ignition in tokamaks

Description: A drift wave turbulence model is used to compute the scaling and magnitude of central electron temperature and confinement time of tokamak plasmas. The results are in accord with experiment. Application to ignition experiments shows that high density (1 to 2) . 10/sup 15/ cm/sup -3/, high field, B/sub T/ > 10 T, but low temperature T approx. 6 keV constitute the optimum path to ignition.

Validation of KENO V. a. and two cross-section libraries for criticality calculations of low-enriched uranium systems

Description: The SCALE code system, utilizing the Monte Carlo computer code KENO V.a, was employed to calculate 37 critical experiments. The critical assemblies had /sup 235/U enrichments of 5% or less and cover a variety of geometries and materials. Characterization of the solid, airborne materials created when UF/sub 6/ reacts with moist air flowing in single-pass mode
