Flow visualizations, velocity measurements, and surface convection measurements in simulated 20. 8-cm Nova box amplifier cavities

Description: Reported are fluid mechanics experiments performed in models of the 20.8-cm Nova amplifier lamp and disk cavities. Lamp cavity nitrogen flows are shown, by both flow visualization and velocity measurements, to be acceptably uniform and parallel to the flashlamps. In contrast, the nitrogen flows in the disk cavity are shown to be disordered. Even though disk cavity flows are disordered, the simplest of three proposed nitrogen introduction systems for the disk cavity was found to be acceptable ba… more

He/sup + +/ transport in the PDX tokamak

Description: A powerful new approach to the study of particle transport and helium ash confinement in high-temperature fusion plasmas is demonstrated by charge-exchange recombination spectroscopy of He/sup + +/ in ohmically heated PDX discharges. Time and space resolved measurements of He/sup + +/ density following a short puff of helium gas into the plasma edge are fitted using a diffusive/convective transport model with coefficients D = (2.1 +- 0.9) x 10/sup 4/ cm/sup 2/ s/sup -1/ and v(r)/D = (0.8 +- 0.3… more

Uptake by plants of radionuclides from FUSRAP waste materials

Description: Radionuclides from FUSRAP wastes potentially may be taken up by plants during remedial action activities and permanent near-surface burial of contaminated materials. In order to better understand the propensity of radionuclides to accumulate in plant tissue, soil and plant factors influencing the uptake and accumulation of radionuclides by plants are reviewed. In addition, data describing the uptake of the principal radionuclides present in FUSRAP wastes (uranium-238, thorium-230, radium-226, l… more

Treatment of coke-oven wastewater with the powdered activated carbon-contact stabilization activated sludge process. Final report

Description: The objective of the study was to determine optimum parameters for the operation of an innovative process train used in the treatment of coke-over wastewater. The treatment process train consisted of a contact-stabilization activated sludge system with powdered activated carbon (PAC) addition, followed by activated sludge nitrification, followed by denitrification in an anoxic filter. The control and operating parameters evaluated during the study were: (a) the average mixed-liquor PAC concentr… more

Tandem mirror technology demonstration facility

Description: This report describes a facility for generating engineering data on the nuclear technologies needed to build an engineering test reactor (ETR). The facility, based on a tandem mirror operating in the Kelley mode, could be used to produce a high neutron flux (1.4 MW/M/sup 2/) on an 8-m/sup 2/ test area for testing fusion blankets. Runs of more than 100 h, with an average availability of 30%, would produce a fluence of 5 mW/yr/m/sup 2/ and give the necessary experience for successful operation of… more

Intergranular crack propagation rates in sensitized Type 304 stainless steel in an oxygenated water environment

Description: Intergranular stress-corrosion crack (IGSCC) propagation rates were measured in three heats of sensitized Type 304 stainless steel (SS) as a function of applied load and sensitization in high-purity water with 8 ppM. Active-loading tests yielded IGSCC propagation rates ranging from approx. 2 x 10/sup -10/ to 1 x 10/sup -9/ m/s (approx. 2 x 10/sup -5/ to 2 x 10/sup -4/ in./h) over the range of stress intensities from 25 to 46 MPa..sqrt..m (22 to 41 ksi..sqrt..in.). Methodology and concepts for the design of surface storage fills at the Anvil Points Oil Shale Retort Facility

Description: Primary obtectives in design of surface disposal fills for processed and raw oil shales are: (a) to insure long-term physical stability, and (b) to prevent surface runoff, surface erosion, and possible subsurface seepage from degrading the water quality of streams and ground water, it was concluded that the analysis and design of spent shale disposal fills should be based on sound geotechnical engineeering principles, considerable experience, and good judgment. An understanding of the source of… more

Riola release report

Description: Eleven hours after execution of the Riola Event (at 0826 PDT on 25 September 1980) in hole U2eq of the Nevada Test Site (NTS), a release of radioactivity began. When the seepage stopped at about noon the following day, up to some 3200 Ci of activity had been dispersed by light variable winds. On 26 September, examination of the geophone records showed six hours of low-level, but fairly continuous, activity before the release. Electrical measurements indicated that most cables were still intact … more
