RMDF leach-field decontamination. Final report

Description: The objective of the decontamination effort was to place the Radioactive Materials Disposal Facility (RMDF) leach field in a condition suitable for release for unrestricted use. Radioactively contaminated soil was excavated from the leach field to produce a condition of contamination as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA). Aeroelastic stability analysis of a Darrieus wind turbine

Description: An aeroelastic stability analysis has been developed for predicting flutter instabilities on vertical axis wind turbines. The analytical model and mathematical formulation of the problem are described as well as the physical mechanism that creates flutter in Darrieus turbines. Theoretical results are compared with measured experimental data from flutter tests of the Sandia 2 Meter turbine. Based on this comparison, the analysis appears to be an adequate design evaluation tool.

Behavior of a plasma in a high-density gas-embedded Z-pinch configuration

Description: The theoretical analysis of a high density Z-pinch (HDZP) begins with an examination of the steady state energy balance between ohmic heating and bremsstrahlung radiation losses for a plasma column in pressure equilibrium. The model is then expanded to include the time-varying internal energy and results in a quasi-equilibrium prescription for the load current through a constant radius plasma channel. Computer codes for dispersion of dense gas

Description: Two models for describing the behavior of dense gases have been adapted for specific applications at the Savannah River Plant (SRP) and have been programmed on the IBM computer. One of the models has been used to predict the effect of a ruptured H/sub 2/S storage tank at the 400 Area. The other model has been used to simulate the effect of an unignited release of H/sub 2/S from the 400-Area flare tower.

Electroless nickel and ion-plated protective coatings for silvered glass mirrors

Description: A preliminary examination of two methods of protecting second surface silvered glass mirrors from environmental degradation is presented. One method employed silver mirrors overcoated with Al, Ni, 304 stainless steel, Cr, or an Al/Cu alloy prepared by ion-plating. Combustion of oil on water: an experimental program

Description: This study determined how well crude and fuel oils burn on water. Experimental observations and model calculations of impurity radiation in a plasma gun compact torus experiment

Description: Several types of radiation measurements were performed on the Beta II compact forms experiment. Among these are time integrated spectra ranging in wavelength from the vuv to the uv, time resolved bolometer measurements of radiation from the x-ray to the infrared, and time and wavelength resolved measurements of certain spectral lines. Identification of magnetic dipole lines above 2000 A in several Mo and Zr ions on the PLT tokamak

Description: A number of spectrum lines arising from magnetic dipole transitions in the n = 3 shell ground configurations of molybdenum and zirconium ions have been identified. Average neutronic properties of prompt fission products

Population and decay of high-spin states in /sup 157-161/Yb: evolution of nuclear shapes as a function spin and neutron number

Description: The population and decay of the entry states in /sup 157-161/Yb and /sup 155-158/Er from the reactions of 136- and 149-MeV /sup 20/Ne with /sup 144/Nd and /sup 146/Nd have been investigated with the Spin Spectrometer gated with a Ge detector. Volume production of negative ions in the reflex-type ion source

Description: The production of negative hydrogen ions is investigated in the reflex-type negative ion source. The extracted negative hydrogen currents of 9.7 mA (100 mA/cm/sup 2/) for H/sup -/ and of 4.1 mA(42 mA/cm/sup 2/) for D/sup -/ are obtained continuously. The impurity is less than 1%. An isotope effect of negative ion production is observed.

Fluidized-Bed Waste-Heat Recovery System development. Semiannual report, February 1-July 31, 1982

Description: The Fluidized-Bed Waste-Heat Recovery (FBWHR) System is designed to preheat this combustion air using the heat available in dirty flue gas streams. In this system, a recirculating medium is heated by the flue gas in a fluidized bed.
