Borehole plugging materials development program, report 2

Description: The data for 2 yr of grout mixtures durability studies developed for the borehole plugging program of the Nuclear Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) are reported. In addition, data for 1 yr of durability studies of grout mixture field samples used to plug the ERDA No. 10 exploratory drill hole near the WIPP site are included. The grout samples and the data do not show any evidence of deterioration during the durability studies that include exposure to brine at both ambient and elevated temperat… more

Impact and compliance: OSHA Carcinogen Policy

Description: This document provides an examination of various aspects of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)Carcinogen Policy. To satisfy the dimensions of the Policy's broad, general nature, a two-fold approach was taken. Throughout, the focus is on the possible effects of the Policy's implementation, but this is first approached as it generally will effect research and compliance activities across broad industry sectors, while specific impacts on DOE are addressed separately… more

Report on SARS backfit evaluation, Exxon Donor Solvent Plant, Baytown, Texas

Description: This report provides information on observations, findings, and conclusions arising from a site visit to the Exxon Donor Solvent Plant, Baytown, Texas. That visit was to provide technical assistance and professional services to the DOE/ASFE/OPTA Project Officer regarding verification of his initial determination that this pilot plant is exempt from the SARS backfit requirement (DOE Order 5481.1). A secondary purpose was to obtain further information regarding the occupational safety and health … more

SRC liquid spill episode, SRC Pilot Plant, Ft. Lewis, Washington. Intermediate report: site visit observations and findings, January 29-February 20, 1980. [2300 gallon spill]

Description: This report is intended to provide responsible DOE authorities with the professional observations and recommendations resulting from this firm's technical assistance in evaluating an accidental release of solvent refined coal (SRC) processed liquids at the SRC Pilot Plant, Ft. Lewis, Washington. The spill occurred during the night of December 19-20, 1979 at the facility operated for DOE by the Pittsburgh and Midway Coal Mining Company. The site visit on January 29, 1980 was made by DOE&#x2… more

Geochemical behavior of the second hot dry rock geothermal reservoir at Fenton Hill, New Mexico

Description: The results of three major heat-extraction experiments conducted in two hot dry geothermal reservoirs indicate that the field chemistry is largely influenced by the interstitial fluid contained in the reservoir rock. This fluid is slowly removed by the circulation of relatively fresh water through the fracture systems until the level of dissolved species is ultimately fixed by rock-water equilibrium. Because the sodium and potassium observed in the system were contributed by the pore-fluid, the… more

Geothermal materials survey : Arkansas Power and Light Development and Demonstration Project. 100kW power system using direct contact heat exchangers, El Dorado, Arkansas

Description: The 100 kW plant is a direct contact boiling/direct contact condensing binary system using isopentane as the working fluid. Treated waste geothermal brine from the Great Lakes Chemical Co. (GLC) bromine recovery operation is the heat source. Brine is taken from the GLC Treated Brine Line at 205 to 210/sup 0/F and supplied to the pilot plant via the APL Brine Inlet Line. The brine enters the direct contact boiler (DCB) and vaporizes isopentane. The cooled brine is discharged into the reinjection… more

Geothermal materials survey: Baca Geothermal Demonstration Power Plant, Baca, New Mexico

Description: The results of a materials survey for the Baca 50 MW(e) single flash geothermal plant in the Valles Caldera of New Mexico are presented. From the design documents provided, materials proposed for use in contact with the plant atmosphere, the two-phase geofluid, the separated steam, and the recirculating condensate cooling water were assessed for suitability. Special emphasis was given to records of performance of the materials in other geothermal plants. Based upon these considerations of chemi… more

Geothermal steam muffler diffusers: the Geysers, California. Failure analysis report

Description: The primary failure mechanism for the T304 diffusers was chloride induced stress corrosion cracking (sec.) Once SCC had progressed to a certain point, high cycle corrosion/fatigue proceeded to the final fracture. Alteration of the environment to prevent SCC is not feasible. The existing environment will also cause sulfide stress cracking (SSC) in susceptible materials; therefore, alternate materials must resist SSC as well as SCC. The very large amplitude operational stresses make heat treatmen… more

Improved algorithms for the calculation of resolved resonance cross sections with applications to the structural Doppler effect in fast reactors

Description: Motivated by a need for an economical yet rigorous tool which can address the computation of the structural material Doppler effect, an extremely efficient improved RABANL capability has been developed utilizing the fact that the Doppler broadened line shape functions become essentially identical to the natural line shape functions or Lorentzian limits beyond about 100 Doppler widths from the resonance energy, or when the natural width exceeds about 200 Doppler widths. The computational efficie… more

Electron excitation collision strengths for positive atomic ions: a collection of theoretical data

Description: This report contains data on theoretical and experimental cross sections for electron impact excitation of positive atomic ions. It is an updated and corrected version of a preliminary manuscript which was used during an Atomic Data Workshop on Electron Excitation of Ions held at Los Alamos in November 1978. The current status of quantitative knowledge of collisional excitation collision strengths is shown for highly stripped ions where configuration mixing, relativistic and resonance effects m… more

Operating temperatures for a convectively cooled recessed incandescent light fixture

Description: Test results are given for the operation of a recessed incandescent light fixture intended for residential use. The fixture is labeled for use in direct contact with attic thermal insulation. Temperature control of the powered fixture is provided by convective heat transfer from the ceiling side of the fixture. The fixture was operated at power levels up to two times the rated power of 75 watts and under thermal insulations up to R-40. In all operating configurations tested the fixture surface … more

Agreement to Provide Energy Planning, Analysis, and Evaluation

Description: Three separate subjects are analyzed: (1) the incremental pricing requirements of LNG projects, (2) cooperative Arab/Israeli energy programs based on natural gas, and (3) the effects of the 1978 Natural Gas Policy Act on the country as a whole and particularly on Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The studies found that (1) incremental pricing of LNG complicates the financing of LNG projects and reduces the number of viable projects, leading to increased oil and LP-gas imports, (2) c… more
