Parametric studies of tandem mirror reactors

Description: This report, along with its companion, An Improved Tandem Mirror Reactor, discusses the recent progress and present status of our tandem mirror reactor studies. This report presents the detailed results of parametric studies up to, but not including, the very new ideas involving thermal barriers.

Nondestructive inspection of plasma-sprayed metallic coatings for coal conversion equipment

Description: This report describes the results of a project to develop nondestructive inspection techniques for metallic wear- and process-resistant coatings used in coal system components. Physical properties, especially porosity, and the nominal 0.25 mm (0.010 in.) thickness complicate the inspection of these coatings. The class of coatings selected for laboratory evaluation were CoCrAlY (cobalt-chromium-aluminum-yttrium) types; the specific material used was a Union Carbide spray powder, UCAR LCO-7, whic… more

Evaluation of two styles of slotted, flat-head screws. [U--6% Nb alloys]

Description: A series of torque tests were performed to evaluate the relative merits of two different flat-head screws fabricated from a uranium--6% niobium alloy. The screws tested were machined with both normal, straight-through slots in the head and with slots having radiused bottoms. Test results indicate that both designs easily surpass the required 20-inch-pound-proof torque.

Material control and accountability aspects of safeguards for the USA /sup 233/U/TH fuel recycle plant

Description: Two fuel cycles are considered. The highly enriched uranium (HEU) cycle uses uranium enriched 93% in /sup 235/U as the initial fuel. The medium enriched uranium (MEU) cycle uses uranium with a /sup 235/U enrichment less than 20% as its initial fuel. In both, /sup 233/U is bred from thorium. The HEU /sup 235/U and the /sup 233/U of both cycles are recycled. The MEU /sup 235/U is retired to waste after one reactor cycle. Typical heavy metal contents of spent fuel elements from both cycles are pre… more

Mahalanobis distance and variable selection to optimize dose response

Description: A battery of statistical techniques are combined to improve detection of low-level dose response. First, Mahalanobis distances are used to classify objects as normal or abnormal. Then the proportion classified abnormal is regressed on dose. Finally, a subset of regressor variables is selected which maximizes the slope of the dose response line. Use of the techniques is illustrated by application to mouse sperm damaged by low doses of x-rays.

Benchmark Critical Experiments on Low-Enriched Uranium Oxide Systems With H/U = 0. 77

Description: Ten benchmark experiments were performed at the Critical Mass Laboratory at Rockwell International'1s Rocky Flats Plant, Golden, Colorado, for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. They provide accurate criticality data for low-enriched damp uranium oxide (U/sub 3/O/sub 8/) systems. The core studied consisted of 152 mm cubical aluminum cans containing an average of 15,129 g of low-enriched (4.46% /sup 235/U) uranium oxide compacted to a density of 4.68 g/cm/sup 3/ and with an H/U atomic ratio o… more

Activities of the Department of Energy in Education. Annual Status Report, FY 1978

Description: The Department of Energy's responsibilities in implementing President Carter's National Energy Plan include identifying the appropriate role of educational activities and institutions in that work. This study describes educational activities as they existed one year after the creation of the Department of Energy. Educational activities of educational institutions are included in the study, with the deliberate exception of the very substantial research activity conducted by universities. This re… more

Description: From abstract "As part of the Department of Energy (DoE) National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program, LKB Resources, Inc. has performed a rotary-wing reconnaissance high sensitivity radiometric and magnetic survey, encompassing several 1:250,000 quadrangles in southwestern Arizona and southeastern California. The surveyed area consisted of approximately 9300 line miles. The radiometric data was corrected and normalized to 400 feet terrain clearance. The data was identified as to rock type by c… more
