Review of California's geothermal-related legislative and regulatory activity through 1979. Report No. 1116

Description: The findings of the 1977 State Geothermal Resources Task Force are divided into four main categories: well siting, power plant siting; environmental problems; and miscellaneous areas. California's 1978 legislation is described using the same categories. The key difficulties still harassing the state's geothermal industry are described including: control over air quality at the Geysers; powerplant finance; a binary cycle demonstration; federal land use decisions; and miscellaneous concerns. Stop bandwidths of nonlinear beam-beam resonances

Description: A general expression is given for the stop bandwidths, ..delta nu../sub N/, of nonlinear beam-beam resonances, which is expanded in powers of Y(s), the vertical beam orbit, and which is valid under certain assumptions regarding the orbits and charge distributions near the interaction regions. This result is applied to obtain results for the rms ..delta nu../sub N/ due to random vertical orbit errors, and due to random errors in ..beta../sub y/ at the crossing points. Numerical results are given… more

Short residence time hydropyrolysis of coal. Technical progress report, 1 October 1979-31 December 1979

Description: A fundamental study of the hydropyrolysis of small coal particles at high pressures and short residence times of both solid and gas is underway to elucidate the chemical and physical rate processes governing the yield and product distributions. Our experimental system has been designed to rapidly heat and quench small samples of coal in batch. Heating rates to 10/sup 4/ degree C/s and temperatures to 1000/sup 0/C are feasible, and quench times of the order of 50 ms have been achieved. Throughou… more

Characteristics of synchrotron radiation and of its sources

Description: Synchrotron light emission and the classical relativistic electromagnetic theory describing it are reviewed. The electron optics of storage rings are considered in some detail, beginning with the ideal electron orbit and the distribution which electrons take around it. This is folded with the process of synchrotron light emission itself to define the effective photon source. The predictions of classical relativistic theory are compared with experiment, and one finds agreement within the experim… more

Potential for energy conservaton in the metal forming industries. Progress report, July 1, 1978-August 15, 1979

Description: Reduced energy consumption and improved product attributes are realizable benefits that are achievable through the adoption of optimal metal forming techniques. With the meteoric rise in energy costs, certain segments of the metal forming industries have accelerated their efforts in switching from energy intensive manufacturing techniques, e.g., casting, to metal forming, and, furthermore, from hot forming and machined components to cold forming, notably the automotive industry. The first year … more

Development of an inter-layer solute transport algorithm for SOLTR computer program. Part 1. The algorithm

Description: In order to perform studies of the influence of regional groundwater flow systems on the long-term performance of potential high-level nuclear waste repositories, it was determined that an adequate computer model would have to consider the full three-dimensional flow system. Golder Associates' SOLTR code, while three-dimensional, has an overly simple algorithm for simulating the passage of radionuclides from one aquifier to another above or below it. Part 1 of this report describes the algorith… more

Solar production of industrial process steam for the Lone Star Brewery. Final report

Description: This report outlines the detailed design and system analysis of a solar industrial process steam system for the Lone Star Brewery. The industrial plant has an average natural gas usage of 12.7 MMcf per month. The majority of this energy goes to producing process steam of 125 psi and 353/sup 0/F at about 50,000 lb/h, with this load dropping to about 6000 lb/h on the weekends. The maximum steam production of the solar energy system is about 1700 lb/h. The climatic conditions at the industrial sit… more

Regulatable elements in the high-level waste management program

Description: Regulatable elements of a deep geological nuclear waste isolation system are those characteristics of a candidate system which need to be specified to achieve control of its performance. This report identifies the regulatable elements with respect to waste form, repository design, site suitability, and the modeling and decision analysis processes. Regulatable elements in each section are listed and described briefly as they affect the short-term and long-term performance of a deep geological re… more

Investigation of freeze concentration as a process for industrial energy conservation in black liquor, acetic acid, and citrus juice applications. Final report

Description: One of the largest consumers of energy in industrial processing is the equipment that concentrates weak aqueous solutions to stronger more sellable or reusable concentrations. The technical and economic feasibility of applying freeze concentration (that is, crystallization and removal from solution of pure solvent - water) as an alternative to heat evaporation (or distillation) to three industrial applications is established. For each of the applications - pulp mill black liquor concentration, … more

Phase 2 of the array automated assembly task for the Low Cost Solar Array Project. Final report, October 1, 1978-October 30, 1979

Description: The process sequence for the fabrication of dendritic web silicon into solar panels has been modified to include aluminum back surface field formation. Sputtering is the preferred method for depositing the aluminum. Plasma etching has been shown to be a feasible technique for pre-diffusion cleaning of the web. This would replace wet chemical cleaning. Several contacting systems have been studied. The total plated Pd-Ni system (Motorola Process) is not compatible with our process sequence; howev… more

Production of aluminum-silicon alloy and ferrosilicon and commercial purity aluminum by the direct reduction process. Fourth interim technical report, Phase B, June 1-August 31, 1979

Description: A series of calculated energy balances were made on alternate thermal processes for Al and Al-Si production. The computer modeling program was checked for validity by modeling low shaft Si production and comparing to known commercial conditions. Burden materials ground to -65 mesh prior to agglomeration compared favorably to -200 mesh grinds. Ball forming agglomeration was developed for bauxite-clay-coke mixes. The balls produced had higher strength and abrasion resistance than extrusions made … more

Impact of RCRA on coal gasification wastes

Description: Coal conversion processes offer the potential for almost every possible mode of environmental contamination. Potential environmental pollution will occur from huge streams of wastewater, scores of gaseous vents and enormous quantities of solid materials. The nature of the waste streams is of particular concern in view of the recently enacted Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The passage and implementation of RCRA poses new levels of control for the traditional solid waste disposal … more

Description: Structure and function are being studied in photosynthetic membranes and their components, principally with Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides. That bacteriochlorophyll (Bchl) can have a strongly shifted absorption maximum in the membrane, without the involvement of excitonic Bchl-Bchl interactions was demonstrated. The orientations of pigments in the membrane are being determined, and the orientations of four distinguishable carotenoid components are under investigation. These studies provide data f… more

Air-sea interaction experiments (1976) at an offshore platform near Atlantic City, New Jersey

Description: Air-sea interaction experiments conducted at an offshore platform near Atlantic City, New Jersey, during September 14-23, 1976, are described in this report. Momentum flux was measured by the eddy correlation method. Wave height, slope, and direction spectra were estimated from wave height variations measured by an array of wave staffs positioned in the corners of an equilateral triangle. Energy analysis of geothermal-electric systems

Description: Standard energy analysis was applied to 4 types of geothermal-electric technologies: liquid dominated, hot dry rock, geopressure, and vapor dominated. It was found that all are net energy producers. Expected uncertainties are not large enough to threaten this conclusion. Vapor dominated, the only technology in current commercial use to produce electricity in the US, has the highest energy ratio (13 +- 4). These results for energy ratio are equal to or less than some from other workers. In the c… more
