Cementitious yttria products

Description: An investigation has been made of the physical properties and formation conditions of cements formed in the yttria/salt/water system. Cementitious binders were of the nominal Y/sub 2/(OH)/sub 5/X.H/sub 2/O type (where X represents the Cl/sup -/ or NO/sub 3//sup -/). An ammonium nitrate-produced yttria cement was shown to be sinterable and was demonstrated to form very refractory castable concretes with zirconia or alumina aggregates.

Experiments with a lime slurry in a stirred tank for the fixation of carbon-14-contaminated CO/sub 2/ from simulated HTGR fuel reprocessing off-gas

Description: The fixation of CO/sub 2/ with a lime slurry in a stirred tank reactor appears to be feasible. The rate of reaction is fast, and virtually complete removal of CO/sub 2/ can be attained. At a gas residence time of <1 min, the decontamination factor (DF) is >100 in a single stage reactor for CO/sub 2/ concentrations ranging from 5 to 100%. It has been determined that two-stage contacting sequences which result in a cumulative DF > 10/sup 4/ are feasible. The reaction rate is constant up … more

Experimental investigation of the chemistry of excited states of rare gases. First quarterly progress report, October 15, 1977--January 15, 1978

Description: The quenching of XeF(B) was studied using the steady-state photolysis of XeF/sub 2/ as the source of XeF(B). The product states from the sensitized reaction of Xe(/sup 3/P/sub 1/) with Cl/sub 2/ and COCl/sub 2/ also were studied. The new XeF(B) quenching rate constants are described. The pulsed laser induced fluorescence technique was used to measure radiative lifetimes and two-body quenching rate constant (with Ar) for the low energy Xe(6p)* states. Serious signal/noise problems for the lowest… more

Current control by a homopolar machine with moving brushes

Description: The equation for TNS Doublet's E-coil circuit with moving brush homopolar machine is integrated in the flux of the homopolar for a monotonically increasing current function extending beyond the current reversal into the burn period. The results show that the moving brush feature is not useful for controlling the burn.

Array automated assembly: Phase 2. Quarterly report

Description: An analysis was made of cost trade-offs for shaping modified square wafers from cylindrical crystals. For reasonably expectable silicon and sheet costs, the optimum shape will be nearer a circle than a square. Tests were conducted of the effectiveness of texture etching for removal of surface damage on sawed wafers. Four glass systems have survived preliminary screening tests for use as edge masking dielectrics. These include beta-spodumen, MgO-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ borosilicate, baria and titania … more

Electron-beam fusion welding of beryllium

Description: Ingot-sheet beryllium (Be) having three different chemistries and three different thicknesses was fusion-welded by the electron-beam process. Several different preheats were used to obtain 100% penetration and crack-free welds. Cracking susceptability was found to be related to aluminum (Al) content; the higher Al-content material was most susceptable. However, adequate preheat allowed full penetration and crack-free welds to be made in all materials tested. The effect of a post-weld heat treat… more

Preliminary report. Preliminary findings and views concerning the exemption of aviation gasoline from the Mandatory Petroleum Allocation and Price Regulations

Description: Preliminary findings indicate that: the fuel is not in short supply; exemption will not have an adverse impact on supply of any other petroleum product subject to the Emergency Petroleum allocation Act of 1973; competition and market force are adequate; exemption will not result in inequitable prices; and exemption will not have adverse state or regional impacts or any other adverse impacts. Chapter II provides background information on the use, production, and distribution of aviation gasoline… more

Radioactive waste transportation systems analysis and program plan

Description: The objective of the Transportation/Logistics Study is to ensure the availability of a viable system for transporting the wastes to a federal repository in 1985. In order to accomplish this objective, a systems analysis of waste transportation has been directed by ORNL to determine the problems that must be solved and to develop a program plan that identifies which problems must first be pursued. To facilitate this overall approach and to provide for short- and long-range waste management, logi… more

Preliminary economic evaluation of a process for the production of fuel grade ethanol by enzymatic hydrolysis of an agricultural waste

Description: This study concerns the preliminary economic feasibility of a process for converting agricultural waste (wheat straw) to fuel grade ethanol through enzymatic hydrolysis. A preliminary design for the process was developed on the basis of research concepts described in the literature. The base case design is for a 25 million gal/yr plant for 95 vol % ethanol from wheat straw. The preliminary design included material and energy balances and major equipment specifications and sizing, which in turn … more

Uranium Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance in southwestern Montana

Description: The Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory conducted a Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance in southwestern Montana from early August to mid-October of 1976. A total of 1240 water and 1933 sediment samples were collected from 1994 locations at a nominal density of one location per 10 km/sup 2/. The water samples were collected from streams, wells, and springs; sediment samples were taken at streams and springs. All samples were analyzed at Los Alamos for total uranium by fluorometry or… more

Precipitation kinetics of a continuous precipitator, with application to the precipitation of ammonium polyuranate

Description: A mathematical model describing the kinetics of continuous precipitation was developed which accounts for crystal nucleation, crystal growth, primary coagulation, and secondary coagulation. Population density distributions, average particle sizes, dominant particle sizes, and suspension density fractions of the crystallites, primary agglomerates, and secondary agglomerates leaving the continuous precipitator can be determined. This kinetic model was applied to the continuous precipitation of am… more

Isotope applications in the environmental field

Description: Established uses of enriched isotopes in the environmental field were surveyed to determine future trends in isotope needs. Based on established isotope uses, on the projected increase in the pollution problem, and on the apparent social and economic pressure for pollution abatement, a significant demand for enriched isotopes appears to be developing for the assessment and control of air, water, and soil pollutants. Isotopic techniques will be used in combination with conventional methods of de… more

NO/sub 2/ levels in diesel exhaust

Description: The safe operation of diesel-powered equipment in underground mines is predicated on there being sufficient ventilation to dilute the exhaust such that none of the toxicants in the dilute mixture exceed allowable levels. In order to determine the ventilation requirement for an engine, it is necessary to measure levels of the various toxicants in the exhaust. Measurements in the past typically either have excluded nitrogen dioxide or have not provided information on nitrogen dioxide specifically… more

RLPORINC: the RELAP4/MOD5 interface to ORINC

Description: The Oak Ridge Inverse code, ORINC, calculates the temperature distribution in an electric core pin from internal temperatures and the conditions in the surrounding environment. While the internal temperatures can be obtained from thermocouples in the Thermal Hydraulic Test Facility, the needed environmental conditions cannot be determined as directly from experimental data. However, this information can be determined from a modified version of the Reactor Linearized Analysis Program, RELAP. In … more

Simple measurement of line density

Description: Energy line density, E/sub l/ = ..integral..(F/2)nk(T/sub e/ + T/sub i/)dA, has proved to be one of the easiest (and most critical) measurements made on the Scylla IV-P, 5-m linear theta pinch. A quantitative evaluation of end-stoppering techniques is made available by extracting the line energy containment time, tau/sub E/sub l//, from the time history of E/sub l/. To model E/sub l/(t) properly and, hence, determine the details of energy loss mechanisms (streaming and thermal conduction) requi… more
