Investigation of induced unimolecular decomposition for development of visible chemical lasers. Final report, 1 May 1976--30 April 1977

Description: This report summarizes the results of a study of azide decomposition for possible application in a visible chemical laser. Task 1 of the subject contract involved thorough review of the chemical literature pertaining to azide decomposition. Covalently bonded azides decompose directly into an electronically excited nitrene (RN) and ground-state molecular nitrogen. Ionic azides decompose to metal atoms and azide radicals. The azide radicals subsequently recombine to form electronically excited ni… more

Thermodynamic properties of SeS

Description: Mass-spectrometry and Knudsen effusion experiments were used to study the equilibrium partial pressure of SeS formed by reaction of S/sub 2/ and Se/sub 2/ which were produced by thermally decomposing a mixture of In/sub 2/S/sub 3/ and In/sub 2/Se/sub 3/ in a Knudsen effusion cell. The heat of formation of SeS(g) was determined by the second law method to be -0.6 +- 3 kcal/mole. The entropy of formation of SeS(g) was calculated from spectrographic data in Ahmed and Barrow to be 1.5 cal/degree-mo… more

Development of passive electronic components for instrumentation of improved geothermal logging tools and components. Annual progress report

Description: Short term objectives for well-logging instrumentation are circuits which can operate at temperatures in the range 275/sup 0/C to 350/sup 0/C; the medium term goal is operation up to 500/sup 0/C, and the long term goal is to achieve operation at 1000/sup 0/C. It is apparent that useful electronic circuits will require the combination of both passive components and active devices. In order to meet the compatibility requirements, the basic technology which has been selected in this project is the… more

Stirling total energy systems study. Final report, May 15, 1976--June 13, 1977

Description: The application of Stirling cycle prime movers to total energy power generation systems was investigated. Electrical, heating, and cooling demand profiles for a typical residential complex, hospital, and office building were studied, and alternative Stirling total energy systems were conceptualized for each site. These were analyzed in detail and contrasted with purchased-power systems for these sites to determine fuel-energy savings and investment attractiveness. The residential complex and ho… more

Survey of selected agencies conducted to determine the extent to which the nation's coals are adequately characterized

Description: A survey was conducted to determine the extent to which the nation's coals were adequately characterized. Questionnaires were sent to 81 agencies in the coal community selected to form a representative cross section of the organizations concerned with coal characterization. Fifty-nine completed questionnaires were received. Respondents included representatives of the agencies with the longest experience in characterization and those in the best position to know the status of our knowledge … more

Physicochemical Studies of the Carbamate-CO/sub 2/-Solvent System

Description: The formation of carbamate from CO/sub 2/ and the various amine solutions has been investigated for the purpose of elucidating the structure of the species generated in the reaction. The amine solutions used were 1 and 2 molar solutions of di-n-butylamine (DNBA) in triethylamine (TEA), pure DNBA and pure TEA. It has been found that the nonaqueous solvent participates in the formation of carbamate in 1 and 2M-DNBA/TEA solutions as a proton acceptor in DNBA-carbamate formation. However, due to th… more

Multiperipheral ring dynamics and a definition of the complete twisted Reggeon loop. [Diagonalization, naturality, threshold behavior, Regge cuts, complex helicity]

Description: The t less than 0 multiperipheral formalism of Ciafaloni, DeTar, Misheloff, Mueller, Muzinich and Yesian is reviewed, extended, and applied to the ordered S-matrix whose ring amplitudes comprise the zeroth level of the topological expansion. Toller M-function notation is used throughout. The bootstrap and cylinder problems are formulated in terms of a well defined helicity pole propagator; a definition of the complete twisted Reggeon loop, which appears in the one-twist term of the cylinder, is… more

High-temperature of thermodynamic properties of sodium

Description: The set of high-temperature thermodynamic properties for sodium in the two-phase and subcooled-liquid regions which was previously recommended, has been modified to incorporate recent experimental data. In particular, replacement of the previously estimated critical constants with experimentally-determined values has resulted in substantial differences in the region of the critical point. The following thermodynamic properties were determined: pressure, density, enthalpy, entropy, internal ener… more

Linear accelerator driven (LADR) and regenerative reactors (LARR) for nuclear non-proliferation

Description: Linear accelerator breeders (LAB) could be used to produce fissile fuel in two modes, either with fuel reprocessing or without fuel reprocessing. With fuel reprocessing, the fissile material would be separated from the target and refabricated into a fuel element for use in a burner power reactor. Without reprocessing, the fissile material would be produced in-situ, either in a fresh fuel element or in a depleted or burned element after use in a power reactor. In the latter mode the fissile mate… more
