Design of Heat-Recovery and Seed-Recovery Units in MHD Power Generation

Description: Crucial and limiting engineering and materials problems associated with the design of an MHD steam bottoming plant are discussed. Existing experimental and theoretical results on corrosion, fouling and deposits, potassium seed recovery and regeneration, are reviewed. The state of knowledge regarding the design of heat recovery and seed recovery units for coal-fired MHD plants is inadequate at the present time.

Design guide for Geothermal Test Facility

Description: The intent of this design guide is to provide the engineer with the necessary information to produce a design for a workable installation. It contains a project scope, specific design information, and project control procedures. The desired process is to flash the geothermal brine to steam in three or four stages and transfer the steam heat energy to the working fluid circulating in closed loop. (MHR)

Fractional airborne release of strontium during the combustion of 30 percent normal tributyl phosphate in a kerosine-type diluent

Description: Engineering scale experiments were performed to determine the fractional airborne release of strontium during a fire involving a contaminated, flammable solvent. Earlier laboratory scale experiments using radioactive materials indicated that this release would be one percent or less. Twenty-five grams of strontium as strontium nitrate was added to 150 liters of 30% normal tributyl phosphate in a kerosine diluent, which was then burned in the ARHCO 224-T Fire Test Facility. Temperatures of 1000/… more

Plan for testing the IVHM inflatable seal to CRBRP conditions

Description: The FFTF-IVHM inflatable seal was tested, and met all requirements. The CRBRP inflatable seals are expected to operate at higher linear velocities and greater distortions, and accumulate more travel, than the IVHM installation. This document describes tests on the IVHM design to CRBRP conditions.

US energy R and D: policy and priorities

Description: The primary purpose of energy research is to help implement and advance energy policy. Energy research reveals new possibilities and new options that ought to influence energy policy. Project Independence, dominated by our commitment to energy self-sufficiency, is our shorter term energy policy, but is not the entire energy policy. Decisions are now being made concerning nuclear plant siting and conservation that go much beyond any immediate commitment to self-sufficiency. Both energy policy an… more

Estimates o the risks associated with dam failure

Description: The probabilities and potential consequences of dam failure in California, primarily due to large earthquakes, was estimated, taking as examples eleven dams having a relatively large population downstream. Mortalities in the event of dam failure range from 11,000 to 260,000, while damage to property may be as high as $720 million. It was assumed that an intensity IX or X earthquake (on the Modified Mercalli Scale) would be sufficient to completely fail earthen dams. Predictions of dam failure w… more

Operational safety report for the cleaning of non-radioactive, sodium-wetted reactor components with ethyl alcohol

Description: The safety aspects of the removal of sodium from nonradioactive reactor components by the alcohol process are described in detail. Pertinent properties of alcohol and hydrogen are presented. Relevant excerpts from the Occupational Safety and Health Act safety codes are presented, and a conceptual system is shown illustrating the application of these safety measures.

Effect of sodium pool temperature on grapple drive stem temperatures at seals in CRBRP IVTM

Description: The effect of sodium pool temperature on the grapple drive stem temperatures at the seals of the CRBRP (Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant) IVTM (In-Vessel Transfer Machine) has been calculated. Reducing the sodium pool temperature from 500 to 400/sup 0/F reduces the maximum grapple drive stem temperature at the seals from 510 to 472/sup 0/F on the initial up-stroke, and from 285 to 225/sup 0/F when system is at dynamic thermal equilibrium. The time the stem can remain in lowered position witho… more

Action plan for promptly assessing Hanford`s nuclear material holdings

Description: The purpose of this discussion is to provide an action plan in the event of a threat in which nuclear material is declared to have been diverted or stolen. This procedure provides the framework by which the Atomic Energy Commission, Richland Operations Office (AEC-RL) will notify its contractors of a threat and direct required action and response to the AEC-RL. This procedure does not consider low-level radiological or biological threats, such as gram quantities. In general the materials to be … more
