Sodium-fire control by space isolation with nitrogen flooding: FFTF proof test F2

Description: Sodium fire protection by space isolation with nitrogen flooding was evaluated by performing a large-scale sodium fire test within a mockup of an FFTF secondary sodium system pipeway. The full scale (3350 ft/sup 3/) mockup was initially filled with air and its leak tightness set to correspond to that expected in an actual FFTF pipeway. The basis for specifying the rate of nitrogen flood gas is discussed ad the experimental verification provided. Nitrogen flooding was activated 15 minutes after … more

Cover gas seals: FFTF-LMFBR seal test program

Description: The objectives of this program are to: (1) conduct static and dynamic tests to demonstrate or determine the mechanical performance of full-size (cross section) FFTF fuel transfer machine and reactor vessel head seals intended for use in a sodium vapor-inert gas environment, (2) demonstrate that these FFTF seals or new seal configurations provide acceptable fission product and cover gas retention capabilities at Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant (CRBRP) operating environmental conditions other … more

Ex-vessel core catcher design requirements and preliminary concepts evaluation. [LMFBR]

Description: As part of the overall study of the consequences of a hypothetical failure to scram following loss of pumping power, design requirements and preliminary concepts evaluation of an ex-vessel core catcher (EVCC) were performed. EVCC is the term applied to a class of devices whose primary objective is to provide a stable subcritical and coolable configuration within containment following a postulated accident in which it is assumed that core debris has penetrated the Reactor Vessel and Guard Vessel… more

Concept and preliminary design of double tubesheet connector region for design and steady-state conditions. [LMFBR]

Description: In this analysis the structural integrity of the double tubesheet connector for the LMFBR demonstration plant steam generator is investigated for design and steady state conditions. Although the evaporator and superheater are to be interchangeable, only the steam outlet end of the evaporator is investigated. This was selected because the mean temperature differences between the tubesheets, tubes and connector are largest here at steady state, thus yielding the highest thermal loads. Combined wi… more

Report on the reconnaissance resistivity survey in the East Mesa area, Imperial County, California for U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation

Description: A section of notes on geothermal exploration using the resistivity method precedes the main body of the paper. Field data from the Broadlands Area of New Zealand, Java, and the Imperial Valley, California are included. The reconnaissance resistivity survey recently completed in the East Mesa Area confirmed that a broad zone of low resistivities at depth extends through the area in a NNW direction. The interpretation of the resistivity data and the location of the resistivity lows at depth is mu… more

Relationships Between Fracture Toughness and Other Material Properties. Final Report

Description: The key experimental and analytical studies which have led to our present understanding of the mechanisms of ductile fracture are reviewed. It is concluded that insufficient progress has been made in the quantitative description of ductile separation mechanisms on a microscale to allow the realistic prediction of fracture toughness from material properties and microstructure. An experimental study of ductile fracture is underway which has the aim of determining the growth rate of voids in known… more

Experimental Geothermal Research Facilities study (Phase 0). Final report. Volume 1

Description: Phase 0 of a project for Experimental Geothermal Research Facilities focuses on identification of a representative liquid-dominated geothermal reservoir of moderate temperature and salinity, preliminary engineering design of an appropriate energy conversion system, identification of critical technology, and planning for implementation of experimental facilities. The objectives included development of liaison with the industrial sector, to ensure responsiveness to their views in facility require… more

ZrH-reactor-technology program. Progress report, April-June 1974

Description: The report on the 2 kW(e) reactor-organic Rankine system was drafted. This report details the design parameters of a minimum weight, 2 kW(e) reactor-organic Rankine system. The system is designed for 5 years unattended life in space. The reactor produces 16.2 kW of thermal power with a NaK outlet temperature of 800/sup 0/F and a 200/sup 0/F ..delta..T. The reactor contains 19 fuel elements, 1.25'' in diameter by 10'' long, hydrided to an N/sub H/ of 6.35. The terrestrial applications effort was… more
