Oceanographic Observations: North Atlantic Standard Monitoring Sections A1, A2, A3, and A4, 1967-1968

Description: Abstract: Seasonal variations in the Labrador Current are described using a defined Labrador Current Water together with geostrophic currents and salinity-temperature variations. The analysis is based on Standard Monitoring Sections occupied during 1967 and 1968 by U.S. Coast Guard cutters.

Equipment Capability Study of the Mettler DWA Automatic Filling Balance

Description: A process capability study was made to evaluate the capability of the Mettler DWA Automatic Filling Balance to dispense desired weights of material. Under ideal or relatively normal conditions the balance met the manufacturer's stated rating. For somewhat abnormal material, the rating was not quite met. An additional calculation is given to indicate expected improvement if abnormal material could be weighed under ideal conditions.

Working Performance of Focused Ultrasonic Search Units Utilizing a Modified 725 Immerscope

Description: The purpose and method employed in-house to quickly ascertain instrument-coupled working performance of focused search-unit piezoelectric materials of similar physical characteristics is illustrated by comparative presentation of data obtained for lithium sulfate and lead metaniobate "units" utilizing a custom built 725 Immerscope.

Study on the Adsorption of Radioisotopes in Solution: I - Adsorption of Pu(IV) in a Sulfuric Acid Media

Description: The adsorption of tetravalent plutonium on glass and platinum in a sulfuric acid solution was studied in the concentration range of the order of 10sup(-5)M. The adsorption is reversible, decreases with an increase in acidity and, in all the cases examined, quite weak (less than 0.01%). It follows the Freundlich isotherm on glass and the Langmuir isotherm on platinum.

LMFBR (LIQUID METAL FAST BREEDER REACTOR) REACTION RATE AND DOSIMETRY QUARTERLY PROGRESS REPORT JUNE JULY AUGUST 1971

Description: This report describes progress in the USAEC-sponsored Interlaboratory LMFBR Reaction Rate (ILRR) program. This program has been established by RDT to develop a capability to accurately measure neutron-induced reaction rates for LMFBR fuels and materials development programs. The initial goal for the principal fission reactions, {sup 235}U, {sup 238}U, and {sup 239}Pu, is an accuracy to within {+-} 5 at the 95% confidence level. Accurate measurement of other fission and non-fission reactions wil… more

Compatibility of uranium-plutonium carbide fuels and potential LMFBR cladding materials

Description: The contact compatibility (in the absence of sodium) between (U,Pu)C with equivalent carbon contents of 4.83, 5.25, and 6.75 wt % and iron-, nickel- and vanadium-base alloys was studied at 700-1100{deg}C for 168-4000 hr. Austenitic iron-base alloys, containing 25 wt % or less nickel and tested at 800{deg}C for up to 4000 hr, showed little or no evidence of carbon transfer from stoichiometric or hyperstoichiometric (U{sub 0.8}Pu{sub 0.2})C that contained up to 20 vol % (U,Pu){sub 2}C{sub 3}. Interaction of 200-500 GeV proton with emulsion nuclei

Description: We are interested in exposing Ilford G-5 pellicles to proton beam from the lowest to the highest energy value available. The exposures shall be along the plane of the pellicles with a flux density of 10{sup 4} to 10{sup 5} particles/cm{sup 2}. We shall study the primary interactions, the multiplicity and the cross-section as a function of primary energy which will vary from 200-500 GeV.

Interaction of high energy protons in nuclear emulsions loaded with b 10 and LiF

Description: An experiment is proposed to expose nuclear emulsions loaded with B{sup 10} and LiF to high energy protons at 100 GeV, 150 GeV and 200 GeV. The purposes are: (i) to measure the total cross-sections at these incident energies, (ii) to investigate charged multiplicity as a function of energy, (iii) to investigate the angular distribution and development of hadron showers in collisions of protons with nuclei.

Neutron diffraction dissociation and coulomb dissociation from various nuclei

Description: We propose to use the 1.75 mr neutral beam in the Meson Lab to study the reaction n + A {yields} N* + A (p + {pi}{sup -}) for targets with as large a range in atomic weight as possible (e.g. hydrogen through lead) and incident neutron energies from approximately 80 to 200 GeV. The aim is to study (1) the cross section vs. energy and mass for (p{pi}{sup -}) masses from 1.08 to approximately 4.7 GeV, (2) the A dependence of the cross section from which information on N* total cross sections in nu… more

Phenomenological study of 200 and 500 GeV/c proton-proton collisions in emulsion

Description: We propose to expose two stacks of nuclear emulsion to the 200 and 500 GeV/c protons. In these stacks, the following properties are examined: (1) energy dependence of total, elastic, and inelastic cross sections, (2) contribution of diffraction dissociation, (3) energy dependence of mean multiplicity, (4) character of multiplicity distribution, (5) behaviors of backwards particles for which momenta and masses are determined.

Proposal to study multiparticle-peripheral hadron physics at NAL

Description: We propose to build a large wire chamber magnetic spectrometer at NAL to measure multi-body forward-going hadronic systems produced by {pi}'s, K's and protons up to 80 GeV/c. Specific reactions will be isolated in order to study the s and t dependencies of the cross sections for peripheral processes, search for new resonant states and attempt to measure {pi}{pi} and K{pi} inelastic scattering. We propose a physics program for the spectrometer which is initially limited to those processes easies… more
