Production test IP-165-C continuous monitoring of front-to-rear flux balance, Final report

Description: Nuclear reactors which contain a significantly large volume operating at or near the same flux level are subject to oscillations of the maximum flux from one region of the reactor to another. To control these flux movements it is necessary to know the location of the flux ``peaks`` and ``valleys`` and the rate of change of the flux at these points. Existing monitoring instruments readily present only a two-dimensional picture of the flux distribution within the reactor; the front-to-rear distri… more

Process Specifications for Operational Control: Purex Plant. Revision 1

Description: The Process Specifications for Operational Control of the Purex Plant(l) have been revised to define the operational control changes as a result of (a) converting the Purex Plant from three to two cycles, and (b) the use of the Plutonium Anion Exchange Unit (N-Cell) for routine plutonium concentration in place of the L-Cell Concentration Package. The flowsheets specified in Figures I-1, -2, and -3, and Table I fulfill the requirements for nuclear and chemical safety within the process as define… more

PT IP-200-A, Temperature measurement of uranium swelling capsule

Description: In the development of fuel elements for the NPR, one potentially serious fuel element problem -- high temperature uranium swelling -- has not been experimentally investigated. A series of experiments has been proposed in which uranium fuel rod with different amounts of Zircaloy-2 cladding will be irradiated to high exposure at temperatures equivalent to those expected in an NPR. These experiments should show the importance of high temperature uranium swelling as a limiting factor in NPR fuel el… more

Examination of selected ruptures from the 1956 KE outbreak

Description: An outbreak of ruptures occurred in the KE Reactor during September, 1956. Radiometallurgical examination of three of these ruptures was requested by the IPD Reactor Fuels Operation. Examination of a fourth rupture which occurred in December, 1956, was later included in the original request. This report presents the results of the requested examination work.

Project Proposal -- Crossheader Pressure Differential Indicators and Alarm Systems -- Hanford Reactors (Project CGI-817)

Description: The purpose of this project is to provide instrumentation at B, C, D, F, H,, KE, and KW Reactors that will (1) indicate front-to-rear differential pressure to assure process water flow in each group of tubes fed by a crossheader, and (2) actuate an alarm in the event of unsafe low flow conditions. The scope of this work consists of the installation of tubing from the rear and front crossheaders to differential pressure instruments on the front face; the provision of a signal panel and alarm hor… more

Avoidance of bulk temperature limits 105-D and F

Description: With higher power levels and probably higher river temperatures, the forthcoming warm water season is expected to impose bulk outlet temperature limits, with consequent production losses, on all Hanford reactors to an even greater extent than last year. The problem has received the attention of a number of management and engineering personnel, but the basis for this study was a letter originating in the Production Operation suggesting two alternate schemes for increasing the flow of process wat… more

Beam hole flux monitors

Description: The octant monitors are an improvement over the early sub-pile flux monitors, but they still do not monitor the flux in the active zone of the reactor. Chambers located within the pile active zone would give the desired information but the inpile environment is too severe to allow a reasonable life for these chambers. A beam hole monitor is suggested to provide the desired flux monitoring. The problem of reactor flux monitoring is discussed. The beam hole monitors have the advantage of providin… more

Full reactor-E-N-load-review of the hazards from a chemical viewpoint

Description: chemical Research and Development Operation was contacted by R. Nilson of Irradiation Processing Department in order to obtain an analysis from a chemical viewpoint of the worst credible accident to a full E-N reactor loading. This analysis would be used to present to the ACRS directly or would be abstracted to prepare a supplementary report. The primary purpose of this report is to present an analysis of the chemical behavior of an E-N loading in the event of the sudden loss of coolant to the … more

Production Test IP-168-A, Long term corrosion monitoring and evaluation of operating limits for I & E charges -- C-Reactor

Description: The performance of I & E fuel elements under the original tests{sup 1} was such that they are now being charged at C Reactor on a production basis. Data obtained from the original test, however, were not sufficient to indicate long term corrosion effects of the use of these elements, nor to accurately define their operating characteristics. It is the intent of this test, therefore, to provide for long term corrosion monitoring in tubes charged with and without water-mixing pieces; and to obtain… more

Chemical Processing Department monthly report, October 1958

Description: Output of plutonium from the separations plants Purex, Redox was slightly less than that scheduled; however, year-to-date production exceeds the corresponding commitment. Production of UO{sub 3} met the commitment, and UO{sub 3} shipments conformed to the established shipping schedule. Production of buttons and shapes was slightly less than the commitment as shown in the current Official Forecast. Shipments of buttons conformed to the current Forecast, while large shape shipments were slightly … more
