Stress Analysis of Bulk Effluent System Components in B and C Reactors

Description: This report presents a study of the stresses induced in the elbow and downcomer of the B and C Reactors (bulk effluent systems) by flow momentum and pressurization effects. It is desirable to ascertain the limitations on the bulk outlet temperatures and flow rates from a stress viewpoint; the elbow, top coverplate of downcomer, and top baffle plate being the most severely stressed components.

GEH-4-32, Bonded segmented fuel element irradiation

Description: We have prepared what we call a bonded segmented fuel element. This fuel element has characteristics which make it an attractive prospect for high specific power operation at relatively low uranium temperatures. The fuel slug is made up of six longitudinal segments; each segment being bonded to the aluminum webbing and tubing that encases it. The pertinent information for this irradiation is summarized along with fabrication details and hazards, thermal aspects and calculations, and figures.

Final report -- IP-153-I, Hagan coagulant aid as a substitute for separan

Description: The demand for filtered water will be increased when I and E slugs are charged into the reactors. Some of the filter plants are near their ultimate capacity. One of the quickest ways of obtaining increased amounts of filtered water for production use is to restore to normal process service certain filters which are now isolated for exclusive drinking water use. These drinking water filters are isolated because the process water filters are being treated with Separans, a material which has not b… more

Evaluation of fuel elements having sealed anodized coatings. Final report, PT-105-621-A-67 MT

Description: Prior to the installation of improved charging machines and charging techniques serious gouging of the soft aluminum fuel element jackets was not infrequent. A certain amount of mechanical abrasion also occurs as the element is pushed over the tube ribs in the course of the loading operation. To eliminate or at least minimize mechanical damage there has been some experimentation with hard anodic coatings applied to the aluminum fuel element jackets. This report is an evaluation of thinner anodi… more

Effects of preheat time in compound layer formation

Description: Hanford fuel elements are made by brazing uranium cores in aluminum cans. The interface, or junction, between the AlSi braze and uranium core known as the compound layer, is composed of an intermetallic complex. The properties of this compound layer, brittleness, ductility, toughness, are considered to have a pronounced influence on the performance of fuel elements in the reactors. This report presents the results of initial efforts to identify the compound layers and establish some of the proc… more

Analysis of production test IP-120-A-94FP comparison of performance of ingot and low hydrogen dingot uranium fuel elements

Description: Twenty charges each of low hydrogen dingot fuel and standard ingot fuel elements were irradiated at DR-reactor. Distortion data from 22 tubes are analyzed in this document. The dingot fuel elements are prone to greater tube filling capacity (TFC) and greater daimeter growths at both center and ends of the fuel elements (the growths at center are larger than at ends). The difference between average warp values for the two types of fuel elements is not statistically significant, indicating that t… more

Redox accountability test program: Initial results

Description: This report details initial results of a large scale accountability test program which was recently carried out in the Redox Facility. The test, as originally planned which was to consist of the complete processing (no inventory-clean plant basis) of about 55 tons of selected metal in conjunction with an extensive analytical, sampling, and volume measurement program. With the exception of two incidents, the processing requirements (minimum inventory and measurement of all material) necessary to… more

Evaluation of vacuum-canned and hot-press fuel elements PT IP-44A and IP-45A

Description: As new designs, geometries, and procedures for fabricating experimental fuel elements are developed, it becomes necessary to determine how well each new product fills the need which prompted its development. While the criteria for satisfactoriness vary with the type of fuel element, there is one criterion that is common to all types designed for use in heterogeneous reactors: the elements must withstand irradiation in the reactor for the required period without jacket rupture or excessive chang… more

100-N temporary construction line considerations

Description: Present thinking and planning appears to be developing from the following factors as concern the 13.8 KV temporary construction power limit. 1. It is understood that the present intent is to supply 100-N operating requirements from a single stub source in the 230 KV loop. 2. The original thoughts were to obtain construction power over a 13.8 KV line from 151-D substation. 3. Construction load requirements are now less than originally planned since steam has been substituted for electrical drive… more

Three Dimensional Flux Control

Description: Recent correlations of slug rupture data have indicated that the failure rate increases markedly with specific slug power. After the fact flux traverses have shown that a large share of the ruptures have occurred in conjunction with flux peaks significantly higher than normally expected. If more complete in-core flux information were available, it is expected that a major portion of the ruptures could be shown as having been caused by abnormally high flux peaks. However, at present.there is nei… more
