Preliminary Investigation of a Five-Crystal Scintillation Gamma-Ray Spectrometer

Description: Abstract: A five-crystal scintillation gamma-ray spectrometer was constructed for use as a Compton coincidence spectrometer or as a pair coincidence spectrometer. Preliminary tests are discussed. The efficiency in either mode of operation was found to be low; however, the backgrounds were favorable and good definition of characteristic lines was achieved...Future tests and plans for improvements are discussed."

On the Possibility of Extracting Energy from Gravitational Systems by Navigating Space Vehicles

Description: This report describes a number of problems, generally involving the possibility of using reserved kinetic energy in such a way as to acquire, by suitable near collisions with one or the other of the celestial bodies discussed, much more kinetic energy that it possesses -- more by an order of magnitude than the available reserve energy would allow it to acquire by itself.

Pressure Balance in a Toroidal Pinch

Description: Abstract: In the study of a linear pinch, use of the equation of pressure balance has proven to be a powerful method of analyzing data taken with a magnetic probe. The toroidal pinch, however, is a geometrically more complicated object, and the use of the pressure balance equations is not so clean cut. It is the object of this note to analyze the pressure balance equations for a torus to the point where they might prove useful in interpreting probe data.

Design and Feasibility Study of a Pebble Bed Reactor-Steam Power Plant

Description: Originally issued as S and P 1963A, Parts I and II. This report covers a design and feasibility study of a pebble bed reactor-steam power plant of 125 megawatt electrical output. The reactor design which evolved from this study is a two-region thermal breeder, operating on the uranium-thorium cycle, in which all core structural materials are graphite. Fuel is in the form of unclad spherical elements of graphite, containing fissile and fertile material. The primary loop consists of the reactor … more

A Preliminary Investigation of the Performance of a Short Length Turbojet Combustor Using Vaporized Hydrocarbon Fuels

Description: "Two short turbojet combustors designed for use with vaporized hydrocarbon fuels were tested in a one-quarter annular duct. The experimental combustors consisted of many small "swirl-can" combustor elements manifolded together. This design approach allowed the secondary mixing zone to be considerably reduced over that of conventional combustors" (p. 1).

Analyses and correlations of HAPO rupture experience with natural uranium material

Description: One of the major factors restricting reactor power levels is the incidence of ruptured slugs. The primary purpose in studying ruptures is to determine how reactor operating variables affect rupture rates. With this knowledge reactor operating conditions may be adjusted or controlled in the manner that will optimize reactor production. In addition, knowledge of rupture rate relationships are useful in fuel element development and in overall economic studies of existing and proposed reactors and … more

Hanford Atomic Products Operation Five-Year Program

Description: The General Electric Company has prepared in past years numerous documents for the Atomic Energy Commission outlining in some detail its current and proposed programs at Hanford. Last year, at the request of the commission, program types of information were consolidated into one document, the HAPO Five Year Program. That document was well received and useful to an extent that the General Electric Company was requested by the Commission to prepare another covering the fiscal years 1959 through 1… more

In-reactor corrosion of X-8001 and 1245 aluminum: Analysis of data from PT IP-42A

Description: Failures of standard fuel element jackets (1245 aluminum alloy) after relatively short Hanford reactor exposures are occurring at high reactor power levels. Metallographic examination of fuel element jackets from short exposure ruptures shows the cause of failure to be rapid intergranular corrosion. This type of attack has been reproduced in laboratory tests by exposure to water at temperatures above 200 C, or to steam at temperatures higher than 300 C. Flow disruptions due to misalignment of t… more

HAPO irradiation of capsules containing UO{sub 2} specimens

Description: A knowledge of the effect of reactor irradiation on the properties of UO{sub 2} is relevant to the design and evaluation of UO{sub 2} fuel elements for the PRTR. Of particular interest is the effect of reactor irradiation on the thermal conductivity of sintered UO{sub 2} and the type, mechanism, and extent of radiation damage in sintered UO{sub 2}. In the latter case the study of fractured surfaces of irradiated UO{sub 2} specimens is a method of determining the extent of radiation damage. It i… more
