Preliminary Investigation of a Five-Crystal Scintillation Gamma-Ray Spectrometer

Description: Abstract: A five-crystal scintillation gamma-ray spectrometer was constructed for use as a Compton coincidence spectrometer or as a pair coincidence spectrometer. Preliminary tests are discussed. The efficiency in either mode of operation was found to be low; however, the backgrounds were favorable and good definition of characteristic lines was achieved...Future tests and plans for improvements are discussed."

Some Reactor Physics in the Rover Project

Description: From abstract: "A general and systematic development of reactor computing methods and detailed application given in Report LAMS-2255 separately is supplemented in this report for a few specific systems of interest to the Rover program. Neutron cross sections, reactor description, and computed results are given for a reactor required to have a constant (radially) power distribution at high temperatures."

The Rolling of Gold Sheet for LAPRE 2 Pressure Liner

Description: From abstract: "This report discusses a special handling procedure devised to prevent contamination of high-purity gold while processing the metal from cast billet to final sheet. Gold of 99.99% purity was cast into rectangular billets and rolled into sheet whose final dimensions were 48 by 12-1/2 by 0.015 inch...As a final step, the sheet was annealed dead-soft in preparation for subsequent forming operations."

On the Possibility of Extracting Energy from Gravitational Systems by Navigating Space Vehicles

Description: This report describes a number of problems, generally involving the possibility of using reserved kinetic energy in such a way as to acquire, by suitable near collisions with one or the other of the celestial bodies discussed, much more kinetic energy that it possesses -- more by an order of magnitude than the available reserve energy would allow it to acquire by itself.

Pressure Balance in a Toroidal Pinch

Description: Abstract: In the study of a linear pinch, use of the equation of pressure balance has proven to be a powerful method of analyzing data taken with a magnetic probe. The toroidal pinch, however, is a geometrically more complicated object, and the use of the pressure balance equations is not so clean cut. It is the object of this note to analyze the pressure balance equations for a torus to the point where they might prove useful in interpreting probe data.

Preliminary Studies on Electrical Propulsion Systems for Space Travel

Description: Report discussing low and high acceleration flight mechanics for interplanetary missions, as well as the energy limitation for electric propulsion systems powered by a nuclear energy source. From abstract: "An optimization procedure for low acceleration systems is given which leads to a simple relationship between mission requirements, payload fraction, power plant specific power, and exhaust velocity."

Small-Scale Instabilites of the Pinch and a Suggested Remedy: The Levitron

Description: Report discussing "experimental results on the classical stabilized pinch," "the usefulness of the Levitron in Stellarator-type operation," and "practical details of the levitation process." A configuration is presented which involves a "toroidal pinch tube inside which a rigid toroidal conductor is levitated by means of an induced magnetic field." Additionally, "an alternative scheme is considered, where the toroidal core is suspended from current-carrying wires, but this approach does not app… more
