Production Test No. 105-565-A: Horizontal rod conversion---old piles

Description: In numerous instances the graphite growth in the older piles has deformed the horizontal control rod holes with a resultant jamming of the rods and overstressing of the rods and thimbles. In addition, special operating procedures to maintain very low differential pressures are required with the present allowed maximum graphite temperatures to prevent collapse of the thimbles because of loss of strength at this temperature. This is currently a limit to the power level of the H Pile. This report … more

A brief review of major problems at Redox

Description: During the last few months the Redox plant has been plagued with an excessive number of problems which have resulted in its inability to meet forecasted production schedules in November 1953, January and February 1954. The following paragraphs are intended to indicate some of the problems faced at Redox and the steps that are being taken to remedy them. It should be emphasized that the plant has been operating far above original design capacity and this fact tends to aggravate some of the probl… more

Considerations for additional 321 Building mercury dissolving studies

Description: Studies in the 321 Building dissolver during December 1953 and January 1954, were successful in developing a laboratory-proved mercury-catalyzed dissolving flowsheet into a suitable plant procedure. However, this flowsheet was not adapted for Redox plant operation because of uncertainty about the possible presence of hydrogen above the lower explosive limit in the off-gases. Subsequent laboratory work has resulted in a better understanding of the hydrogen evolution, and has resulted in developi… more

Causes of damage to tube 1794-C

Description: Tube 1794-C was removed from the pile as a leaker on July 15, 1954. The tube had been in-pile since startup and had contained a charge of 32 ``C`` metal slugs just prior to discharge. The tube was slit and examined at the 105-DR underwater viewing facility by Pile Coolant Studies tube examination personnel. A report is made of the examination of tube 1794-C which revealed areas of severe pitting damage. This damage was apparently caused by cocked slugs abrading the tube. The attack was great en… more

Pilot-plant studies of mercury-catalyzed dissolving of aluminum-jacketed fuel elements

Description: The objective of the experimental studies reported herein was to demonstrate the laboratory-developed mercury-catalyzed dissolving procedure on a pilot-plant scale by conducting a series of test dissolutions of aluminum-jacketed, unirradiated uranium in the 150-gallon downdraft type semiworks dissolver in 321 Building. It was desired to establish: (1) the effect of the larger-scale operation on time cycle; (2) dissolution rates of aluminum and uranium, (3) controllability of the reactions, and … more

Decontamination of bismuth phosphate process first cycle and coating removal wastes

Description: Recent successes with the use of metal ferrocynanides, particularly nickel ferrocyanide, for the removal of cesium from Uranium Recovery Process wastes prompted an investigation into the use of this carrier for the removal of cesium from wastes produced in the coating-removal and first-decontamination-cycle steps of the Bismuth Phosphate Process. Both in-line treatment of the wastes currently produced and treatment of supernatant liquids from wastes already stored in underground tanks were cons… more

Design criteria -- Reactor plant modifications for increased production and 100-C Area Alterations (Sections A and B) CG-558. Volume 1

Description: This document defines the basic criteria to be used in the preparation of detailed design for Project CG-558, Reactor Plant Modification for Increased Production and for Project CG-600, 100-C Area Alterations. It has been determined that the most economical method of increasing plutonium production within the next five years is by the modernization and improvement of the 100-B, 100-C, 100-D, 100-DR, 100-F, and 100-H reactor plants. These reactors are currently incapable of operating at their ma… more

Final reports on PT 105-551-A and Supplement A, ``High exposure thorium`` and PT 105-516-A, ``Effects of irradiation of thorium slugs``

Description: This report discusses Production Test 105-516-A which was written to determine the stability by both measurement and visual examination, of thorium slugs as used in flattening columns to exposures in excess of 400 MWD/AT. Both rolled and extruded thorium slugs were used; the highest exposures reached were about 1000 MWD/AT. Also discussed is Production Test 105-551-A which was written to demonstrate the stability of thorium slugs as used in flattening columns at exposures up to approximately 15… more

C Reactor reorificing analysis

Description: during the December 1953 extended outage the process water flow at C Reactor was increased and redistributed to allow reactor operation with a 69 tube enrichment ring in the third lattice unit and with the maximum protection afforded by the trip before boiling operational concept. The redistribution was accomplished by the installation of individual venturi flow meters on approximately 1800 process tubes. Flow and pressure requirements were met by the installation of larger diameter conventiona… more

Fabrication and testing history prototypes and production units

Description: From April, 1951 to Aug, 1954, New York Shipbuilding Corp. carried out a subcontract with E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company that was without parallel in the shipyard`s history. The work, designated the NYX Project for reasons of security, was vital to the operations of the Savannah River Plant, Aiken, S.C., which was then being designed and constructed by du Pont for the Atomic Energy Commission. It consisted of three broad parts: developmental and experimental work; fabrication and testing of … more

Final report on Production Test No. 105-551-SR -- The fission gas experiment, KAPL-M-108

Description: This experiment was designed to furnish data on the quantitative relationship between exposure of enriched uranium metal to thermal neutron bombardment and the subsequent release of gaseous fission fragments from the metal. Studies of data obtained from the in-pile phase of the KAPL Fission Gas Experiment indicate, neglecting startup and shutdown transients, that gaseous fission fragments generated within a 6-mill foil of uranium metal maintained at an operating temperature of about 450 C are r… more

Macro-examination of enriched uranium slug ruptures

Description: This report covers the preliminary data obtained in a metallurgical study of the three enriched uranium slugs which ruptured in the 100-C Pile. The three slugs were from PT-105-532-A2, ``Irradiation of Enriched Uranium Slugs,`` a test conducted by Pile Technology for the purpose of studying the effects of high specific powers in uranium slugs.
