Recovery of Uranium From Congo Leach Liquors With Ion Exchange Resins

Description: A method is described for recovery of uranium from sulfuric acid leach liquors of Congo ores using anion exchange resins. Excellent uranium recoveries were obtained in cyclic tests which indicate uranium capacities of 11 to 26 lbs. of U3O8 per cubic foot of resin per day. Preliminary tests indicate that sulfuric acid may be as effective as hydrochloric acid in providing the required acidity in the eluant.

Calcining-Amenability Testing of Rand Precipitates

Description: Test work on two samples of high-grade Rand uranium precipitate indicated the desirability of calcining it at 400' to 500'C. to cut shipping costs and provide a refinery feed quite amenable to treatment by the nitric acid digestion-TBP process.

Progress Report For September 16, 1951 - November 15, 1951

Description: This project report covers leaching and precipitation work on uranium ore samples from the Belgian Congo, South Australia (Radium Hill), Temple Mountain (Utah) and Grants, New Mexico. Ion exchange studies on the effect of cobalt, thiocyanate, and polythionates in Rand liquors and resin life testing studies are noted. Ion exchange work with Climax Uranium leach liquors using 2 inch diameter columns is reported. Lyometallurgical studies with the effect of organo-phosphates on the extraction of ur… more

Application of Heavy Media Separation, Flotation and Carbonate Leaching to Congo Ores

Description: The investigation of magnesitic-dolomite uranium ores from Union Miniere du Haute Katanga, Belgian Congo, was undertaken in order to examine the possibility of separating the uranium minerals from the carbonate minerals by Heavy Media Separation or froth flotation; thus reducing the sulfuric acid consumption during the uranium leach. In addition, the effect of carbonate leaching the whole ore and carbonate flotation products was examined.

Progress Report For January 16, 1951 - March 15, 1951

Description: A progress report on the results obtained, during the period, on ore samples from Grants, New Mexico, Maryvale, Utah, Hite, Utah, a fluorite deposit in Utah, and Rand ores. Also reported are results obtained with anion exchange resins in pulp, and systematic studies with anion exchange resins. Application of the lyometallurgical process to several ores and the use of an activated alumina column for purification of pregnant solvent solutions before precipitation are mentioned. Analytical develop… more

Progress Report For March 16, 1951 - May 15, 1951

Description: A progress report on investigations dealing with ores from Grants, New Mexico, Lukachukai Mountain District in Arizona, Belgian Congo, Thomas Mountain Range in Utah, and the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Anionic exchange resin studies such as resin in pulp, self elution with Rand leach liquors, adsorption of uranyl nitrate and uranyl perchlorate, adsorption of iron, manganese, cobalt, arsenic and molybdenum from sulfite solutions, adsorption or uranium from chloride bearing sulfate solutions are… more

Leaching and Precipitation Tests on Grants Ores

Description: Leaching tests were run on two samples from the Grants area in New Mexico. Uranium extractions of 94 per cent were obtained by leaching Sample 6-1 with solutions containing 240 lbs. of Na2CO3 and 60 lbs. of NaHCO3 per ton and by leaching Sample 6-2 with 270 lbs. of Na2CO3 and 180 lbs. of NaHCO3 per ton. Cyclic tests were completed using caustic precipitation of the leach liquor.

Vapor Traps for Handling Liquid Sodium

Description: An active program is a present underway to develop equipment to handle liquid metals. Among the metals being studied are sodium and sodium--potassium alloy (the latter commonly referred to as NaK). In many of the systems being studied this liquid metal is pressurized by inert gas in the lines. At times it is necessary to bleed off some of this gas from the system. Although the gas is allowed to escape at a temperature at which the vapor pressure of sodium is extremely small, it has been found t… more
