The Uravan Mineral Belt

Description: "This report briefly describes the [Urvanian Mineral Belt] and outlines the geologic evidence supporting its concept. General plans for continuous exploration of this belt, and preliminary prediction of the total amount of carnotite-bearing rocks that might be in one unexplored area, are also presented"

Oralloy Hydride Critical Assemblies

Description: Part I of this report covers critical-mass determinations for pseudospheres of oralloy hydride composition (approximating UH3) in 8"-thick Tu and Ni tampers and in the Tu tamper with Ni liner. The critical mass of a hydride cube in the thick Tu also is given. Data on weight and dimensional changes of hydride pieces during the period of use are included. In Part II are presented the results of Rossi time-scale measurements on the hydride assemblies. Values of alpha at delayed critical and its va… more

The Reaction of Tritium and Stopcock Grease

Description: This investigation was begun as a result of a mass spectrometric measurement of two samples of tritium which had been stored for several months in Pyrex glass bulbs using stopcocks. The first of these was originally supposed to be of extremely high isotopic and chemical purity. What was observed at this time was 1.45 H had accumulated, and that tritiated methane, CT4, was also present to the extent of 0.18%. A consistent attempt had been made in this sample to protect the gas from contact with … more

The Counting Efficiency of Counter Tubes with Aluminum, Copper and Gold Cathodes for X-Rays in the Range 5 Kev to 60 Kev

Description: The author's measurement using counting tubes were performed with an X-ray beam, produced by an X-ray tube. The X-ray beam impinges on only a very small part of the counting tube. In this work the counting efficiency of counting tubes with A1-Cu- and Au-cathodes is determined for X-radiation in the range 5 Kev to 60 Kev.

Attack on Uranium by Lithium at 600 C

Description: The tests described in this report were static tests devised to afford a basis for a quick evaluation of the resistance of uranium to attack by lithium. The work was done at the same time as the tests of beryllium, thorium, and various engineering metals in lithium (described in ANL-4990); but the results with uranium are given in the present classified report so that the results of the other tests can be published as an unclassified document. The procedure for carrying out the tests is describ… more

Aerodynamic Characteristics of Damping Screens

Description: From Summary: "The experimental investigation of damping screens described herein was undertaken primarily to test theories of the effects of damping screens and to obtain information on the performance of screens in oblique flow. The characteristics investigated include the damping of longitudinal and lateral components of turbulence, the effect of screens on scale, the conditions for the production of turbulence and eddies by screens, and the damping of spatial variations of mean speed."

Method for determining the frequency-response characteristics of an element or system from the system transient output response to a known input function

Description: "A method is presented for the determination of the frequency-response characteristics of an element or system by utilizing the transient output response to a known but arbitrary input to the system. Since the application of special inputs, such as step functions or sinusoids, is often imperfect or impractical, a method for utilizing arbitrary inputs is desirable. Simple flight-test data may be reduced by this method to give the frequency response of an aircraft" (p. 1).
