Poison patterns for counteracting rod failures

Description: This report contains the calculation of the number and spacing of poison columns required to hold a 105 pile in the following cases: (1) complete failure of horizontal rods, (2) complete failure of all rods. Using 10% Cd 90% Pb poison columns of 1.44 inch diameter, it is found that 17 poison columns are required to hold the pile in case of complete failure of horizontal rods, and 65 poison columns are required to hold the pile in case of complete failure of all rods.

Graphite expansion committee meeting of June 6, 1947

Description: The gas thermometer in the F Pile has been overhauled and re-calibrated. The readings are still in agreement with the readings from the graphite thermocouples. A similar overhaul of the gas thermometer in the D Pile will be made during June. The progress of further outward bowing of Tube 2496-D can not be followed satisfactorily even though readings are obtained from both inlet and outlet ends of the tube. Preliminary results obtained from the one-tube mock-up suggest the possibility that the g… more

Extraction of Uranium from Iron Box Sludge

Description: It was desired to establish the adaptability of iron box sludge, a residue recovered in the initial concentration of domestic ores, as a raw material from the production of high purity U{sub 3}O{sub 8}. This report summarizes the experimental work on the extraction of uranium from iron box sludge and that on the removal of V{sub 2}O{sub 5} and P{sub 2}O{sub 5} from the solutions.

Uranium Peroxide

Description: It was desired to investigate the precipitation of UO{sub 4} in acid solution, in order to determine the suitability of this reaction for use in the purification of uranium. A series of tests was performed to establish the conditions for precipitation of UO{sub 4}. It was found that uranium could be completely precipitated from pure uranyl sulfate solution at a pH of 2.5 to 3.5, with only silght excess of H{sub 2}O{sub 2}. The presence of sodium sulfate interferred with complete precipitation. … more

Distribution of Boron in Processing of Carnotite Concentrate

Description: It was desired to determine the distribution of boron in the various steps of the processing of domestic ore concentrates containing high percentages of boron. The experiments described in this report were directed toward that end. Summary of this report are: (1) a black oxide containing 0.6 ppm of boron was prepared from material containing 350 ppm; (2) less than 0.02% of the boron in the original material appeared in the black oxide; (3) the iron step did not remove appreciable amounts of bor… more

Waste disposal: Failure of T Plant underground metal waste line from Section 9

Description: On June 23, 1947, a hole was discovered in the earthen fill near the T Plant R-19 stairwell directly above the path followed by the underground waste lines from the canyon. Jetting of all canyon wastes to the 241 Buildings was stopped and the canyon process shut down. This report discusses repair and characterization procedures for the soils and waste line pipe.

Interim report No. 6 production test No. 106-52-P, graphite expansion: Gun barrel clearance

Description: The face to face expansion of the graphite packing of the pile reduces the gun barrel sum-clearance and if continued will strain the aluminum tubes with ultimate rupture of the Van Stone joints. The graphite expansion may be determined while an aluminum process tube is out of the unit. The distance from the graphite at the inner end of one gun barrel to the corresponding point at the opposite face is measured and compared to a similar measurement that was made during construction of the pile. Hanford Engineer Works technical progress letter number 152: May 25 through May 31, 1947

Description: This report gives weekly progress in pile technology. An exposure of over 96 hours was made with the slug radiographing apparatus from May 22 to May 26. The three pieces subjected to the exposure included one of the special pieces designed for installation of a thermocouple. The thermocouple well in the special pieces showed up satisfactorily and for the first time it was possible to detect spots which could be due to small voids. Crushing and breaking strength measurements made on graphite pie… more

Progress Report for 1947

Description: The year 1947 has witnessed the dawn of a new era of atomic science, a flowering of fundamental knowledge of the nature of matter which appears to be unsurpassed even by that period of the 1930's which led to the age of plutonium. A great new cyclotron, an atom-smasher ten times more powerful than the one which brought plutonium into the world, has carried mankind over a new horizon of sub-atomic space. It has brought scientists at last to grips with the infinitely small and rapid forces, until… more

Excitation Function of the Reaction C12(n,2n)C11 at High Energies

Description: The excitation curve for the reaction C{sup 12}(n,2n)C{sup 11} has been calculated for energies up to 100 Mev. The calculations were done as described in the preceding letter for the similar reaction of C{sup 12} under proton bombardment. The results of the calculations for 50% charge exchange are shown in Figure 1. The calculated cross section for the reaction at 90 Mev is: .011 barns for 100% charge exchange and .013 barns for 50% charge exchange. The experimental value is 0.025 {+-} .004 bar… more

Summary of the Reseach Progress Meeting

Description: A 1,000 Mev synchrotron is under construction. The magnet will be a ring magnet containing about 900 tons of steel. The plates are of 1.2 inch steel with a 0.1 percent carbon content. A diagram of the cross section of this magnet is given in Figure 1. The design of the vacuum chmnber presents some difficulties since the space behind the gap is not large enough to permit easy access to the windings and to the vacuum space behind the gap. The field strength at the gap is 15,000 gauss with a 1 sec… more

Interium Report on An Exact Analysis of a Limited Plane Plasma in a Magnetic Field

Description: Prior analyses of a plasma in a magnetic field have been limited, as far as the writer is aware, to cases in which the relative change in field over the orbital distance and the relative change in ion concentration are both small, or in which the relations have been viewed in a purely hydrodynamical way. The first approach excludes cases which can be of considerable interest, for it fails for a plasma edge. The second loses all sight of the structure imposed by the orbital motions.

Summary of the Research Progress Meeting

Description: This summary discusses the following topics: (1) Neutron Scattering. By R. Hildebrand. A series of measurements have been made of the angular distribution of neutrons scattered from small spheres of various materials placed in the neutron beam of the l84-inch cyclotron. The scattered neutrons were detected by copper covered carbon detectors placed in a symmetrical arrangement about the scatterer. The carbon detectors, which wore activated by the neutrons through the C{sup 12}(n, 2n)C{sup 11} re… more

Proton Angular Distribution for 90 Mev Neutron-proton Scattering

Description: The angular distribution of the recoil protons in neutron-proton scattering at 90 Mev has been measured for angles between 5{sup o} and 65{sup o} from the direction of the neutron beam. The neutrons were produced by stripping 190 Mev deuterons in a 1/2 inch Be target in the 184-inch F.M. cyclotron. R. Serber has calculated the neutron energy distribution; it has a peak at 90 Mev and a half width of 27 Mev. This distributiQn has been checked experimentally for the neutrons by Wilson Powell and b… more

Phosphorus Turnover and Photosynthesis

Description: The participation of phosphorus in biological oxidation-reduction reactions of the type found in glycolysis ADP {ne} PO{sub 4}H{sup -} + 3-phosphoglyceraldehyde + DPN{sup +} = 3-phosphoglycerate{sup -} + 2H{sup +} + DPHN + ATP has suggested theories in which similar reactions are proposed for photosynthesis. In these theories the reducing power of photosynthesis is utilized not only for reduction of carbon dioxide but also, by means of coupled oxidations, for the generation of high-energy phosp… more
