Procedures for the Separation of Products Resulting From Bombardment of Heavy Elements

Description: Technical report that attempts to bring together the various chemical procedures which proved most useful in studying the results of cyclotron bombardment or small scale neutron bombardments of heavy element targets. The report is limited to the elements of the "actinide", or second rare earth series, starting with thorium and including the newly discovered elements of atomic number 95 and 96. Every attempt is made to include all details necessary so this report can serve as a practical labora… more

The Laplacian for a Beryllium Metal Lattice of Volume Ratio 17.2

Description: Abstract. the Laplacian of a beryllium metal lattice with 3.3 kg of uranium metal per cell and a volume ratio of 17.2 was measured in the removable region of the CP-2 machine. the sandwich effect with different moderators made interpretation of the observations very uncertain. The best result found was Be = 407 x 10(-6) cm(-2).

The Deposition of Plutonium and Certain Fission Products in Bone as a Decontamination Problem

Description: The following report discusses the deposition of radioactive elements during a nuclear fission in the skeleton. Studies are concerned with chronic effects of toxic radiation developing within the bone marrow and decontaminating the cells.

Identification and Characterization of Shielded Isotopes in Uranium Fission

Description: Abstract: "The first shielded isotope, 34th Br-82 has been isolated in fission. Its fission yield is about 3 x 10-(-5)%. This is a direct measurement of the yield of a primary fission product and gives direct information as to the distribution of nuclear charge among primary fission fragments of given mass numbers as discussed by Glendenin and Coryell."

A Note on the Use of Ion Exchange Resins for the Purification of Urinary Purines, Kynurenic Acid, and Coproporphyrin: (Preliminary Report)

Description: Abstract: "Preliminary studies are reported on the use of the ion exchange resins for the adsorptions of purines, uracil, nucleotides, kynurenic acid, and coproporphyrin. Adenine and guanine are adsorbed on IR-100 resin from neutral solution and eluted by HCl. Kynurenic acid and coproporphyrin are adsorbed from neutral solution on IR-4 resin and eluted by HCl. Coproporphyrin is strongly adsorbed on IR-100 resin from either acid, alkaline, or neutral solution. Kynurenic acid is poorly adsorbed o… more

Estimation of Small Quantities of Uranium in Thorium

Description: Abstract: "Estimation of the intensity of the uranyl fluorescence furnishes a method for the determination of quantities of uranium as low as one-half microgram of uranium in one-half illilitor of glassy phosphoric acid. The test has been used to detect directly three parts of uranium in one million parts of thorium" (p. 1).

Report on a Magnetic Drive Design for the Fercleve Coporation

Description: This report discusses the development of a design for a "permanent magnet drive to couple a motor shaft with a pump impeller through a thick metallic diaphragm of small diameter. [...] The following report presents the procedures and results of the magnetic drive development up to date of cancellation and includes the general features of the design which would have been recommended if the contract had not been cancelled" (p. 1).

RADIOCARBON FROM PILE GRAPHITE CHEMICAL METHODS FOR ITS CONCENTRATIONS

Description: Samples of pile graphite, irradiated in a test-hole at Hanford for 15 months, have been assayed for radioactive C{sup14}, yielding 0.38 ± 0.04 microcuries per gram. At this level of activity, the pile graphite contains very valuable amounts of C{sup14}. The relation between the above assay and the probable average assay of pile graphite is discussed, and it is concluded that the latter is almost certainly above 0.3 uc/ gram. Controlled oxidation of this graphite, either with oxygen at ~ 750°C, … more

LIQUID THERMAL DIFFUSION

Description: A revised and expanded version of NNES-DC-1. The liquid thermal diffusion method for the separation of isotopes is described. The discussion includes the experimental aspects of the method, description of equipment, and the theoretical aspects of the process as applied to the design, development, and performance criteria. A short history of the liquid thermal diffusion method from 1940 to 1945 is preserted along; with a survey of relevant literature prior to 1940. The remainder of the report is… more
