Fission product studies with plant dissolver solutions: IX-Iodine, X-Arsenic. SE-PC No. 61

Description: In continuing studies to characterize and identify fission product activities formed in the piles and appearing in plant dissolver solutions work was done to determine whether or not long-lived isotopes of certain elements were present. Two of the elements in this category were iodine and arsenic. The iodine isotope of particular interest was I{sup 129}. Graphite expansion committee meeting of October 4, 1946

Description: Recent data show that test hole samples out from the center of a bar show greater expansion rates than do samples out from the edge of a bar. The previously noticed irregularities in expansion of test hole samples are attributed to this phenomenon. For unexplained reasons, the expansion of the graphite piles is in close agreement with the smaller expansion rates shown by test hole samples rather than with the larger rates. Graphite expansion committee meeting of December 6, 1946

Description: The twelfth meeting of the Graphite Expansion Committee was held on December 6, 1946. A summary of the meeting is as follows. Recent laboratory studies suggest that the rate of graphite expansion decreases with exposure when the samples are exposed in an air atmosphere at ambient pile temperature, through the relative effects of atmosphere and temperature are not known. Description: This report divides the activities for November into three sections: D Pile; F Pile; and general physics. During November the D Pile was down twice for regularly scheduled shutdowns. Two scram occurred during the month, both of short duration. Five Special Request 15 tubes were discharged and recharged with Special Request 15. Description: Extrusion was run on one day, February 2, and a total of 271 billets (178 Type G, 12 type BT, and 81 red band) were processed. Two failures occurred among the red band billets; UM 6610 had begun to melt in the furnace and TX 3323 disintegrated on being extruded through the die. A Study of the Distribution of Impurities in the Extraction of Uranyl Nitrate with Ether from Aqueous Solutions

Description: Early in 1942 it had been found on a laboratory scale that certain impurities such as the Rare Earths were removed by small water washes from an ether solution of Uranyl Nitrate. Treatment of Torbernite

Description: Production of black oxide from torbernite was studied on a laboratory scale from the standpoint of uranium extraction, reagent requirements, and removal of impurities. The Effect of Age on the Radiosensitivity of Mice

Description: Abstract: Mice of different ages ranging from 1.5 to 12 months have been exposed to gamma rays in an effort to determine the change in radiosensitivity with age. The dose necessary to cause 50% killing was determined for each age group and sex. No change in sensitivity with age was observed with either sex, although the experimental error in the case of the males was quite large. The females were found to be more resistant than the males.

Some Studies of the Reactions of Uranium Oxides with Hydrogen, Oxygen and Water

Description: Abstract: The purpose of this research was to obtain data that would be useful in predicting changes that might be expected to occur in the oxidation state and degree of hydration of powdered uranium oxides maintained for long periods of time at temperatures between 30 and 300 degrees C. in the presence of excess water, hydrogen, oxygen and possibly hydrogen peroxide. The reaction of hydrogen and oxygen with water slurries of U3O8 were studied at 100-300 degree C.

The U + 4 - U02 ++ Couple in H2SO , and the U + S - u + 4 Couple in HCl

Description: Technical report: Measurements have been made on the equilibrium between Cu, Cu2+, U4+, and UO22+ in H2SO4 in an attempt to establish the value of the U4+ - UO22+ couple potential. The value of the formal potential for the U3+ - U4+ couple in 1N HCl at 0 degrees C was determined to be + 0.65 v.

The Dissolution of Thorium Metal and Thorium Dioxide in HNO3 - HF and HNO3- ( NH4 ) 2 SiF6 Mixtures

Description: Abstract. A satisfactory method has been found for dissolving thorium metal and thorium oxide in heat-treated 25-12 stainless steel vessels without excessive corrosion of the vessels. The dissolution medium consists of strong HNO3 containing a small amount of fluoride or fluo-silicate. the fluoride required has no harmful effects on a subsequent solvent-extraction step for a separation of uranium isotopes from the dissolved thorium.
