The longitudinal stability of flying boats as determined by tests of models in the NACA tank 1: methods used for the investigation of longitudinal stability characteristics

Description: Report presenting testing of dynamic models that has been helpful in the determination of the longitudinal stability characteristics on the water of a number of specific flying boats. Results regarding the constant-speed tests, accelerated runs, effect of variations in moment of inertia, effect of variations in mass moving vertically, effect of variations of depth of step, and effect of variations of gross load coefficient are provided.

Cooling Tests of an Air-Cooled Engine Cylinder With Copper Fins on the Barrel

Description: Report presenting the results of comparative cooling tests run on two Wright C9GC (G-200) cylinders, one with the original steel fins and one with 1-inch spiral copper fins brazed on the barrel. Calculations were also performed using copper and aluminum fins with the same weight as the original steel fins, which showed positive results. Results regarding cylinder-temperature correlation, piston-temperature correlation, and comparative performance are also provided.

Interaction of Be with Fission Neutrons

Description: To determine whether or not the (n,2n) reaction in Be would produce a net increase in fission neutrons in a power plant, the distribution of In resonance neutrons slowed down from fission energies in a graphite block was measured with and without a 2" of Be in front of a U3O8 slab undergoing fission. The thermal neutrons producing the fissions were obtained by slowing down neutrons from a cyclotron source. The observed distribution without Be was well represented by a Gaussian source range 36 c… more

Poisoning and Production in a Power Plant

Description: The yield of 49, the efficiency of production of 49, and poisoning in a power plant are discussed. Only the crudest of estimates of the poisoning are possible: these indicated that production will probably not be hampered by poisoning. In this case the yield of 49 could be as high as 3 kg/ton but only about 2 kg/ton is compatible with a fairly high efficiency. In the case that production is stopped by poisoning, smaller yields, proportional to the tolerable loss in k, are obtained. In this case… more

Methods used in the NACA tank for the investigation of the longitudinal-stability characteristics of models of flying boats

Description: Report presents the results of tests of longitudinal stability characteristics of models of several flying boats conducted in the NACA Tank No. 1. These investigations were made for the purpose of (1) determining suitable methods for evaluating the stability characteristics of models of flying boats, and (2) determining the design parameters which have an important effect on the porpoising. This report is mainly concerned with the construction of suitable models, the apparatus, and methods used… more

Heat Transfer in the Turbulent Boundary Layer of a Compressible Gas at High Speeds

Description: "The Reynolds law of heat transfer from a wall to a turbulent stream is extended to the case of flow of a compressible gas at high speeds. The analysis is based on the modern theory of the turbulent boundary layer with laminar sublayer. The investigation is carried out for the case of a plate situated in a parallel stream. The results are obtained independently of the velocity distribution in the turbulent boundar layer" (p. 1).
