A general tank test of a model of the hull of the Pem-1 flying boat including a special working chart for the determination of hull performance

Description: The results of a general tank test of a 1/6 full-size model of the hull of the P3M-1 flying boat (N.A.C.A. model 18) are given in non-dimensional form. In addition to the usual curves, the results are presented in a new form that makes it possible to apply them more conveniently than in the forms previously used. The resistance was compared with that of N.A.C.A. models 11-C and 26(Sikorsky S-40) and was found to be generally less than the resistance of either.

The Effect of Surface Irregularities on Wing Drag 1 - Rivets and Spot Welds

Description: "Tests have been conducted in the NACA 8-foot high-speed wind tunnel to determine the effect of exposed rivet heads and spot welds on wing drag. Most of the tests were made with an airfoil of 5-foot chord. The air speed was varied from 80 to 500 miles per hour and the lift coefficient from 0 to 0.30" (p. 1).

Model Study of the Outlet Structures for the Wappapello Dam

Description: This memorandum constitutes a final report of the study performed at the U. S. Waterways Experiment Station on a model of the outlet works for the Wappapello Dam The model was built undistorted to the linear scale ratio, model-to-prototype, of 1 to 25. The general purpose of the model study was to check the hydraulic characteristics of all elements in the design of the outlet works, and to develop means of correcting any uneconomic, unsafe, or undesirable conditions.

Tests of a Contra-Propeller for Aircraft

Tank Tests to Show the Effect Rivet Heads on the Water Performance of a Seaplane-Float

Description: "A 1/3.5 full-sized model of a seaplane float constructed from lines supplied by the Bureau of Aeronautics, Navy Department, was tested first with smooth painted bottom surfaces and then with round-head rivets, plate laps, and keel plates fitted to simulate the actual bottom of a metal float. Description: "Equations and design charts are given for predicting the downwash angles and the wake characteristics for power-off conditions behind plain and flapped wings of the types used in modern design practice. The downwash charts cover the cases of elliptical wings and wings of taper ratios 1, 2, 3, and 5, with aspect ratios of 6, 9, and 12, having flaps covering 0, 40, 70, and 100 percent of the span. The Twisting of Thin-Walled, Stiffened Circular Cylinders

Description: On the basis of the present investigation of the twisting of thin-walled, stiffened cylinders the following conclusions can be reached: 1) there is as yet no generally applicable formula for the buckling moment of the skin; 2) the mathematical treatment of the condition of the shell after buckling of the skin is based on the tension-field theory, wherein the strain condition is considered homogenous.
