Investigation of the Variations in the Velocity of the Air Flow About a Wing Profile

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation to determine the variations in the velocity of the air when it was obliged to flow about a wing profile. Special interest was paid to the determination of velocity as compared with that of the undisturbed flow and of the velocity drop in successive planes perpendicular to the flow direction at increasing distances from the wing profile.

Applied Potential Corrosion of Aluminum and 18-8 Stainless Steel Alloys

Description: Introduction: In anticipation of the design of equipment for heat transfer tests, a series of short exposure corrosion tests was initiated in an effort to determine the order of magnitude of the corrosion involved. Information was required on the effect on corrosion rates of applying a potential between two concentric tubes, the annulus between them containing condensate water.

Lithologic Studies of Fine-Grained Upper Cretaceous Sedimentary Rocks of the Black Hills Region

Description: More than nine-tenths of the Upper Cretaceous rocks in northeastern Wyoming are fine-grained shales, mudstones, and calcareous marls. A comparative study of the mineralogy, chemical and mechanical composition, density and porosity, fissility, and lamination of samples of these rocks discloses several relations that throw light on the geologic history and structural deformation of the region, and perhaps on its oil and gas possibilities.

Geology of the Eastern Part of the Santa Monica Mountains, Los Angeles County, California

Description: From abstract: The Santa Monica Mountains lie only a few miles northwest of the city of Los Angeles and comprise one of the prominent structural features that adjoin the Los Angeles Basin, one of the most prolific oil-producing districts of California. Even though the eastern part of these mountains may yield no oil, information concerning the rock types, structural character, and detailed geologic history of this area should be of value to petroleum geologists. The area described in this repor… more

Geologic History of the Yosemite Valley

Description: The principal result of the investigations upon which this report is based is the determination within narrow limits of the preglacial depth of the Yosemite Valley and of other facts concerning its preglacial development which permit fairly definite estimates of the proportionate shares of work performed by stream and by glacier. The investigations comprise a detailed survey of the glacial and geomorphologic features of the Yosemite region and an equally intensive study of its rock formations, … more

Geology and Oil Resources Along the Southern Border of San Joaquin Valley, California

Description: From abstract: The region described in this report includes a foothill belt of the San Emigdio and Tehachapi Mountains along the southern border of San Joaquin Valley. The belt displays portions of the rugged granitic cores of the mountains and also rocks of Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene age. Although there is thus a complete representation of the geologic series from the Eocene to the Pleistocene, some portions of the different series are wanting because of major faults… more

Geology and Coal Resources of the Meeker Quadrangle, Moffat and Rio Blanco Counties, Colorado

Description: From introduction: The investigations on which the greater part of this report is based were carried on by E. T. Hancock, the senior author, during the summer of 1911. They were undertaken by the United States Geological Survey under a comprehensive plan for collecting information about the undeveloped fuel resources of the Western States, both as a step toward the conservation of the coal resources of the United States and as a means of supplying the demand for information concerning the many … more

Coefficients of Flow of Standard Nozzles

Description: We first undertook experiments with air, devoted principally to the investigation of the disturbances due to the differences in the nature of the flow to the nozzle. The difficulty of measuring the air, however, caused us to experiment with water. Due to the possibility of measuring the capacity of the container, this method was much more accurate than measuring with Pitot tobes.

Experimental Research on the Friction of Pivots

Description: In horology the friction between solids is of the greatest importance; one limited, however, to the application of the laws of Coulomb which, do not at all correspond with reality. This report presents a review of the subject and some general conclusions. The choice of lubricant is discussed as well as the pressure between frictional surfaces. The gears in a watch are used extensively as examples.

Load Assumptions for Calculating the Strength of Airplanes

Description: "The following load assumptions shall be taken as the basis of the strength calculations. Certain definite load conditions (e.g. of flight, control, landing and transport) shall be assumed. The loads shall be assumed to be safe loads, constant or only slowly variable, and the inertia forces due to elastic deformation are accordingly disregarded. The external forces, the force of gravity and the inertia forces on the whole airplane shall produce a condition of equilibrium" (p. 1).
