Seaplanes for Commerce

Description: The advantages of using seaplanes for commercial purposes is discussed. The three primary advantages described include their superior speeds over existing means of transport on the same routes, the available landing fields when flying over the water, and the reduction of distance from the airport to the city is serves due to the seaplane's ability to land in water.

My Experience With Helicopters

Description: The author recounts his experiments with helicopters. The object of his investigations was to remain stationary in the air for five minutes and to make a closed flight at low altitude. Some of the topics discussed include stabilization, horizontal flight, and directional control.

The New Interpretation of the Laws of Air Resistance

Description: A closer examination of Newton's formula for air resistance shows that it is well to consider the air as an ordinary fluid, and, indeed for most of the velocities considered, as a non-compressible fluid, so long as the dimensions of the moving body are large in comparison with the mean free path of the particles of air.

Wood Versus Metal in Airplane Construction

Description: The aim of this article is to present, in broad outline, a scientific method for solving the problem, "Wood or Metal." It will be shown that structural methods have by no means reached their final perfection. The strength of the different materials is discussed as well as different construction methods.

Control Operating Mechanisms for Airplanes

Description: The connections between the cockpit and the control surfaces are examined. An examination of the pros and cons of using stick control, the problems of control in giant aircraft, an effort to find a substitute for these controls, and a proposed concept for mechanically operated gear are provided.

Soaring Without Rising Currents

Description: Memorandum describing the main problem of soaring flight, which is that it is difficult to maintain altitude and to engage in indefinite continuation of flight without dependence on rising currents from any source. The best chance of success involves utilizing energy stored in the air when the wind speed is constantly and rapidly varying.

The Effect of Bow Stiffeners in Nonrigid Airships

Description: "It is now well known that all nonrigid airships constructed at the present time have bow stiffeners consisting of battens curved to the form of the envelope and designed to hold the nose of the ship in its true form despite the very large pressure which exists at the extreme forward point. The effect of the stiffeners is to reduce considerably the apparent pressure which has to be maintained inside the envelope in order to prevent the nose from caving in" (p. 1).
