Map Showing Total Thickness of the Fox Hills-Lower Hell Creek Aquifer, Montana

Description: Introduction: In 1978 the U.S. Geological Survey began a 4-year study of aquifers in the northern Great Plains. The purpose of this map, which is a product of that study, is to show the total thickness of the Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer. Other maps show the altitude of the top (Feltism 1982a), cumulative thickness of sandstone (Feltis, 1982b), and potentiometric surface of water (Levings, 1982) in the Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer. These maps are part of a series that describes the … more

Evaluation of the Response of the Big Sioux Aquifer to Extreme Drought Conditions in Minnehaha County, South Dakota

Description: From purpose and approach of study: The purpose of this study was to use the digital-computer model developed from the previous study (Koch, 1982) to examine the effects on the aquifer of a pumping rate of 25 million gallons a day under the worst-drought conditions that occurred during 1974-78. A frequency rating was determined for the most severe low-flow condition in the Big Sioux River.

Flood Elevations for the Soleduck River at Sol Duc Hot Springs, Clallam County, Washington

Description: Abstract: Elevations and inundation areas of a 100-year flood of the Soleduck River, Washington, were determined by the U.S. Geological Survey for the area in the vicinity of the Sol Duc Hot Springs resort, a public facility in the Olympic National Park that under Federal law must be located beyond or protected from damage by a 100-year flood. Results show that most flooding could be eliminated by raising parts of an existing dike. In general, little flood damage is expected, except at the sout… more

Ground Water in the Northeast Part of Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, Bagdad Area, California

Description: Purpose and scope: The U.S. Marine Corps conducts training maneuvers in the study area. Lack of a local source of water has severely limited the utilization of the area. In the past, limited quantities of water have been transported to the area by truck or helicopter. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of obtaining a supply of ground water in the area for use when field maneuvers are being conducted. The major effort for this study was concentrated on the part within the… more

Geohydrologic Data from the Jemez Mountains and Vicinity, North-Central New Mexico

Description: Abstract: The Jemez Mountains volcanic region, on the west margin of the Rio Grande rift in north-central New Mexico, is the site of studies whose objective is power development using geothermal heat. This report summarizes geohydrologic data obtained to provide background information relative to the geothermal exploration and to investigate the usefulness of hydrology in assessment of the geothermal resource. Eleven tables present chemical, temperature, discharge, and other data for springs, w… more

Potentiometric Map of the Memphis Sand in the Memphis Area, Tennessee, August 1978

Description: From explanation: This map is based on water level measurements made in wells screened in the Eocene Memphis Sand (formerly "500-foot sand"). Monthly low-water levels for the month of August, 1978 from USGS maintained recorder equipped wells and supplemental measurements made on August 22 and 23 of private and industrial wells were used as control. Water levels are commonly at their lowest for the year during late August of early September (Criner and Parks, 1976).

Assessment of Water Quality in Streams Draining Coal-Producing Areas in Ohio

Description: From introduction: In 1975 a project was begun to provide information on several aspects of coal hydrology in Ohio. The first phase was a reconnaissance of water-quality conditions in coal-mining regions. Phase one had two primary objectives; to document the occurrence of certain inorganic and organic constituents in waters of the coal-mining regions and to determine if the concentrations of those constituents were related to coal mining. The second phase of the project was a more detailed stu… more
