Regional Geohydrology of the Northern Louisiana Salt-Dome Basin, Part 3, Potentiometric Levels of the Wilcox-Carrizo and Sparta Aquifers

Description: From abstract: This report is the third in a series of reports describing the regional geohydrology of the northern Louisiana salt-dome basin. The Wilcox-Carrizo and Sparta aquifers are the principal Tertiary aquifers of regional extent in the basin. The Wilcox-Carrizo aquifer is not affected by regional water-level declines, as no large pumping centers have been developed. Water-level fluctuations in wells are mostly seasonal. As shown by the hydrographs of seven wells, the seasonal fluctuatio… more

Effects of the Drought of 1980-81 on Streamflow and on Ground-Water Levels in Georgia

Description: From purpose and scope: This report examines and discusses the severity, areal extent, and duration of the 1980-81 drought in Georgia. This drought produced the lowest rates of streamflow since 1954 in most areas of the State and the lowest since 1925 in some areas.

Streamflow Losses Along the Balcones Fault Zone, Nueces River Basin, Texas

Description: From purpose and scope: The overall purpose of the investigation was to provide information useful for designing recharge reservoirs above the Balcones Fault Zone and for managing these reservoirs for efficient and effective use of the ground- and surface-water resources. Major objectives were to define the distribution of streamflow losses along the streams, to quantify the natural losses, and to determine the influence of various hydrologic conditions such as antecedent conditions, ground-wat… more

Map Showing Cumulative Thickness of Sandstone in the Lakota Formation and Equivalent Rocks, Montana

Description: Introduction: In 1978 the U.S. Geological Survey began a 4-year study of aquifers in the northern Great Plains. The purpose of this map, which is a product of that study, is to show the cumulative thickness of sandstone in the Lakota Formation and equivalent rocks. Other maps show the altitude of the top (Feltis, 1982a), total thickness (Feltis, 1982b), and potentiometric surface of water (Levings, 1982) of the Lakota Formation and equivalent rocks. These maps are part of a series that describe… more

Effect of Surface Coal Mining on the Hydrology of Crooked and Turkey Creek Basins, Jefferson County, Alabama

Description: From introduction: The objective of this project is to measure the impact coal mining has on the hydrologic system and to develop the capability for predicting the effect of future mining on water resources. To achieve this necessities isolating the problems and measuring the parameters involved before, during, and after mining.

Altitude and Generalized Configuration of the Top of the Floridian Aquifer, St. Johns County, Florida

Description: From introduction: This map shows the approximate altitude and configuration of the top of the Floridian aquifer...This map was prepared from geologic, geophysical, and drillers' logs on file with the Florida Bureau of Geology, U.S. Geological Survey, St. Johns River Water Management District, and from logs in published reports.

Flow Routing in the Susquehanna River Basin: Part II - Low-Flow Frequency Characteristics of the Susquehanna River Between Waverly, New York and Sunbury, Pennsylvania

Description: From introduction: The primary objective of this study, second in the series, is the development, calibration, and verification of flow-routing models for the Susquehanna River from Waverly, New York, to Sunbury, Pennsylvania. These models will permit SRBC to estimate the effects of water-resource developments upstream from Waverly at six locations on the Susquehanna River. They were also used to simulate for existing conditions at two ungaged sites.

Hydrology of Selected Basins in the Warrior Coal Field, Alabama -- A Progress Report

Description: Abstract: Hydrologic data are being collected in four basins in the Warrior coal field to provide baseline information to aid in determining the effect mining will have on water resource Basins monitored are in two different geologic and hydrologic environments. Well yields from the Pottsville Formation generally range from 0 to 0.3 L/s, whereas well yields from the Coker Formation generally range from 0.3 L/s to 6.4 L/s. Streamflow distribute reflects seasonal precipitation. Streams draining b… more

Reconnaissance of Surface-Water Resources in the Togiak River Basin, Southwestern Alaska, 1980 and 1982

Description: From introduction: This report is a product of a Geological Survey program, under way since the early 1970's, to study environmental conditions in selected frontier areas of Alaska...The purpose of this report is to present reconnaissance-level data on the surface-water resources of the Togiak River basin. These data include measurements and observations of streamflow conditions during late summer and late winter periods, stream-channel characteristics, evidence of past flooding and erosion, wa… more

Hydrology of the Wibaux-Beach Lignite Deposit Area, Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota

Description: From objectives and scope: This study was undertaken in response to U.S. Bureau of Land Management concerns for the water resources of the Wibaux-Beach area in the event of lignite mining. The objectives of the study were to: (1) Define the stratigraphic sequence within a few hundred feet above and below the minable lignite; (2) define the premining hydrologic and geochemical regime of the Wibaux-Beach deposit area; and (3) describe some of the hydrologic implications of the strip-mining proces… more

Measurement of Bedload Discharge in Nine Illinois Streams with the Helley-Smith Sampler

Description: From purpose and study: The purpose of the present study was to analyze the bedload discharge measurements, to develop bedload-discharge rating curves for those sites with sufficient record, to determine the usefulness of each sampling site for measurement of bedload discharge, and to evaluate the suitability of the Helley-Smith sampler to Illinois streams.

A Two-Dimensional, Finite-Difference Model of the High Plains Aquifer in Southern South Dakota

Description: Purpose: The objectives of this study were (1) to collect, synthesize, and interpret geologic and hydrologic data on the aquifer in the southern South Dakota area; (2) to evaluate, by digital-computer-model simulation, values assigned to the aquifer parameters; and (3) to evaluate the sensitivity of the calibrated digital-computer-model to changes in magnitude of the selected hydrologic parameters. Results of this study are, therefore, applicable to solving potential water-resource management p… more
