Magnitude and Frequency of Floods in Small Drainage Basins in Idaho

Description: Abstract: A method which relates basin characteristics with peak flow characteristics is presented for determining magnitude and frequency of floods on streams with drainage areas between 0.5 and 200 square miles. Regression equations for each of eight regions are presented for determination of the 10-year flood. Peak flows for the 25- and 50-year floods can then be estimated from ratios developed for each region. Regression equations are not developed because of poor definitions for several ar… more

Low-Flow Characteristics at Gaging Stations on the Wisconsin, Fox, and Wolf Rivers, Wisconsin

Description: From introduction: The purpose of the low-flow characteristics are in some instances affected by the period of record. These characteristics can vary as much as +/- 30 percent at some gaging stations depending on whether or not the severe drought of the 1930's was included in the analysis.

Potential Hydrologic Impacts of a Tar-Sand Industry in 11 Special Tar Sand Areas in Eastern Utah

Description: From purpose and scope: This report summarizes the hydrology in and near the 11 Special Tar Sand Areas which were designated by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The 11 areas are in eastern Utah where normal annual precipitation generally ranges from less than 6 to about 20 inches and runoff is minimal.

Land-Surface Subsidence at Seabrook, Texas

Description: Abstract: Removal of water, oil, and gas from the subsurface in Harris and Galveston Counties, Texas, has caused a decline in fluid pressures, which in turn has resulted in subsidence of the land surface. Subsidence of the land surface at Seabrook is due principally to the removal of water. Significant subsidence of the land surface probably began after 1920, and a minimum of about 3.3 feet (1.0 m) and a maximum of about 4.3 feet (1.3 m) of subsidence had occurred at Seabrook by 1973. Probable … more

Estimated Natural Streamflow in the Rio San Jose Upstream from the Pueblos of Acoma and Laguna, New Mexico

Description: From purpose and scope: The purpose of this study was to estimate the natural streamflow in the Rio San Jose at the upstream boundaries of the Pueblos of Acoma and Laguna. Natural streamflow is defined for this study as the streamflow that would have occurred if water development in the basin upstream from the pueblos had never taken place.

Hydraulic Characteristics and Water-Supply Potential of the May 1975 Aquifers in the Vicinity of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, South Bend, Indiana

Description: Abstract: An intensive study was made of a 24-square mile (62-square kilometer) area surrounding the South Bend wastewater treatment plant to document the effects of dewatering about 40 feet (12 meter) of the 130-feet (40-meter) thick aquifer during construction at the plant, define the hydrologic system in order to allow development of a predictive model and select and evaluate one possible water-supply development plan as a model demonstration. Model-simulated water levels agree very well wi… more

Hydrologic Relations Between Lakes and Aquifers in a Recharge Area near Orlando, Florida

Description: Abstract: The three lakes investigated gain water- from adjoining water-table aquifer and lose water to Floridan aquifer by downward leakage. Net seepage (net exchange of water between lake and aquifers) can be estimated by equation S = AX + BY, where S is net seepage, X represents hydraulic gradient between lake and water-table aquifer, A is lumped parameter representing effect of hydaulic conductivity and cross-sectional area of materials in flow section of water-table aquifer, Y is head diff… more
