Hydrologic Effects of Annually Diverting 131,000 Acre-Feet of Water from Dillon Reservoir, Central Colorado

Description: From abstract: because of the increased demands for water in eastern Colorado, principally in the urbanizing Denver metropolitan area, increased diversions of water from Dillon Reservoir are planned. Estimates of end-of-month storage in Dillon Reservoir, assuming the reservoir was in place and 131,000 acre-feet of water were diverted from the reservoir each year, were reconstructed by mass balance for the 1931-77 water years. Based on the analysis, the annual maximum end-of-month drawdown below… more

Flow Routing in the Susquehanna River Basin: Part III -- Routing Reservoir Releases in the Tioga and Chemung Rivers System, Pennsylvania and New York

Description: From abstract: Channel-routing models were used to route hypothetical releases from reservoirs in the upper Tioga River basin, Pennsylvania. These releases were routed northward down the Tioga River to Lindley, Erwins, and Corning, New York; combined with flows routed down the Cohocton River from Campbell to Corning, New York; and then routed southeastward down the Chemung River from Corning to Chemung, New York. The models used to route the flows of Cohocton and Chemung Rivers accounted for b… more

Revision of the Documentation for a Model for Calculating Effects of Liquid Waste Disposal in Deep Saline Aquifers

Description: Abstract: Details of additions and modifications to a computer code described in an earlier report entitled "A model for calculating effects of liquid waste disposal in deep saline aquifers,: USGS WRI 76-61, NTIS-PB256 903/AS are documented. These additions and modifications include free water surface, vertical recharge, equilibrium controlled linear absorption and a first order irreversible rate reaction. These, plus additional modifications, make this model more adaptable to general hydrologi… more

Chemical, Physical, and Radiological Quality of Selected Public Water Supplies in Florida, November 1977-February 1978

Description: Abstract: Virtually all treated public water supplies sampled in Florida meet the National Inter-Primary and Proposed Secondary Drinking Water Regulations. These findings are based on a water-quality reconnaissance of 129 treated public supplies throughout the State during the period November 1977 through February 1978. While primary drinking water regulation exceedences were infrequent , lead, selenium, and gross alpha radioactivity in a very few water supplies were above established maximum c… more

A Facility Designed to Monitor the Unsaturated Zone During Infiltration of Tertiary-Treated Sewage, Long Island, New York

Description: Abstract: A facility consisting of a circular recharge basin 6.10 meters in diameter with a central observation manhole was developed on Long Island to study the role of the unsaturated zone during aquifer recharge with tertiary-treated sewage. The manhole extends through most of the 7.5-meter-thick unsaturated zone, which is composed of glacial outwash sand and gravel, and enables collection of water samples and monitoring of dynamic characteristics of the unsaturated zone during recharge exp… more

Hydrogeologic Features of the Alluvial Deposits in the Greybull River Valley, Bighorn Basin, Wyoming

Description: Abstract: The alluvial aquifer along the Greybull River consists principally of the Greybull terrace deposits and the flood-plain alluvium but also includes the Burlington terrace deposits and the flood-plain alluvium but also includes the Burlington terrace deposits east of Burlington, the McKinnie terrace, and the younger, generally undissected alluvial-fan deposits. Well-log data and 18 surface-resistivity measurements at four localities indicate that the thickness of the alluvial aquifer is… more

Spring-Deposited Travertine in Eleven Western States

Description: From introduction: Travertine is defined for this paper as a carbonate-mineral deposit dominated by calcium carbonate, formed through the agency of spring water. Thus is includes terms such as tufa, onyx marble, calcareous sinter, and calcareous spring deposits. However, we exclude carbonate deposits in caves, those formed by wave action and other shore processes, and bioherms except as algae may participate in the process of calcium carbonate from spring water.

Monthly and Annual Water Budgets of Lake Wingra, Madison, Wisconsin, 1972-1977

Description: From abstract: This report presents estimated annual and monthly water budgets for lake Wingra and the adjacent wetland area for January 1972 through September 1977. Annually, inputs from precipitation, surface runoff, and ground-water inflow are approximately equal (31, 34, and 35 percent, respectively). Outputs include outflow from the lake into Murphy Creek (70 percent), evotranspiration from the lake and wetland (26 percent), and ground-water outflow (4 percent).

Hydrology and Water Quality in the Nederlo Creek Basin, Wisconsin, Before Construction of Two Water-Retention Structures

Description: From introduction: This study was begun in 1967 in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of natural Resources (DNR)--its purpose was to evaluate the effects of construction of a reservoir and a floodwater-retention structure on the hydrologic system and water quality in a small basin in southwestern Wisconsin. In 1968, Federal research funds were obtained to provide for more detailed study of water quality and to extend the scope of the study to include aquatic biota.
