A Needle in a Haystack

Description: Abstract: "Production of [rho]'s and [omega]'s in [pi]- + p and p + [letter p with a bar over it] interactions is discussed. The [rho] is presumably a J = 1-, 1 = 1 state and thus can decay into 2[pi]'s via a strong coupling. The [omega] is probably J = 1-, 1 = 0 which can also decay into 2[pi]'s via electromagnetic coupling. A theoretical description of this situation is presented in terms of coupled time-dependent Schroedinger equations which mix [rho] and [omega] states that are assumed to b… more

Pathologic and Behavioral Changes in Mice Following CNS Deuteron Irradiation

Description: From introduction: "The specific aims of this study were the following: (1) To produce radiogenic lesions by 1 mm deuteron beams at a dose of 8,000 rads directed unilaterally and bilaterally to the parietal areas and unilaterally to the cerebellum, and by two 9 x 0.025 mm microbeams, 0.5 mm apart, applied across the neocerebellar cortex at 72,000 rads; and (2) to relate these histopathologically demonstrable alterations to possible behavioral changes following irradiation. Since these radiogeni… more

Graphite Problems in Air-Cooled Reactors

Description: This report discusses problems affecting the long-term use of graphite in air-cooled reactors. The report identifies these problems as oxidation, radiation induced dimensional expansions and accumulation of stored energy. The report finds that "frequent low temperature annealing eliminates these problems and may extend the lifetime of the graphite indefinitely." (From abstract)

Eddy Transport in Liquid-Metal Heat Transfer

Description: This report seeks to "develop a practical method of evaluating the eddy diffusivity of heat transfer for liquid metals, so that it can be incorporated into the more or less standard theoretical methods to give heat transfer coefficients which are in reasonable agreement with experimental facts"--from introduction.

The Temperature Dependence of Birefringence in Irradiated Polyethylene

Description: Technical report on a study where the birefringence of irradiated polyethylene was observed as a function of temperature. The data is consistent with a mechanism in which crosslinking limits the growth and annealing of crystallites. Crosslinks formed in material which was oriented at the time the crosslinks were formed, results in an oriented gel. This effect explains the birefringence and the persistence of nucleation sites at high temperatures.
