Description: Part A. The major effort during the past year has been the construction of a suitable vacuum furnace for studying the effects of temperature and pressure on the wettability of metals by glass. A systems was completed that was capable of subjecting test combinations up to temperatures of 1400 degree C at a working pressure of 1 x 10(-5) mm. of Hg. Part B. A compound, identified by X-ray analysis as sodium meta tantalate (na2Ta2O6), was found at the interface between a sodium silicate glass and t… more

Gas Plated Coatings on Metals and Alloys : Progress Report No. 6 and Final Report

Description: The object of the work performed under this contract was to investigate the possibility of gas plating copper base metal with (a) pure chromium metal from chromium hexacarbonyl vapor; (b) chromium-nickel plating from a mixture of chromium hexacarbonyl and nickel tetracarbonyl. The object of the work performed during the final month was to confirm the fact that the gas plating of chromium metal and chromium-nickel laminates free from nitrides, oxides and carbides was practical.

Automatic Thermogravimetric Analysis in Ceramics

Description: Ceramic investigators often find it desirable to know the weight of reactants either immediately after a given heating period or while the specimen is still at the elevated reacting temperature. The conventional gravimetric methods render either of these goals difficult if not actually impossible. Specimens often gain weight through adsorption of water or other reactions upon cooling to room temperature. Desiccators are employed but are not completely satisfactory. Repeated heating and weighing… more

High Altitude Cosmic Ray Neutron Intensity Variations

Description: Three groups of balloon flights carrying unshielded boron trifluoride counters were made from geomagnetic latitudes 10.1°N, 55.1°N, and 88.6°N. From the data obtained, curves of slow-neutron intensity versus atmospheric depth for depths less than 700 millibars are plotted. The mean absorption lengths for neutrons in the equilibrium portion of the atmosphere were found to be [formula]. The depths of the neutron intensity maxima were found to be [formula]. From these results and those of other in… more

The Lindemann and Grüneisen Laws

Description: The Lindemann assumption of direct contact of neighboring atoms at fusion is replaced by the criterion that melting occurs when the root-mean-square amplitude of thermal vibration reaches a critical fraction ρ, presumed the same for all isotropic monatomic solids, of the distance of separation of nearest-neighbor atoms. The Debye-Waller theory of the temperature dependence of the intensity of Bragg reflection of x-rays is used, without further assumptions, to derive a generalized Lindemann law… more

The Equation of the Fusion Curve

Description: A generalization of the Lindemann law is used in connection with the Murnaghan equation of state for a solid to derive theoretically the empirical Simon equation for the fusion curve. For the alkali metals it is shown that experimental values of the temperature exponent in the Simon equation are quantitatively compatible with the theoretical evaluation given, and, furthermore, that the theory can predict approximate values of the experiment, in practice.

Echelle Spectroscopy. Seventeenth Quarterly Progress Report

Description: This is the seventeenth quarterly report on our echelle project, as numbered above. Our work this quarter has to some extent been directed towards the Spectroscopy Symposium held at Argonne National Laboratory on February 15, 16, and 17. This report consists principally of brief abstracts of the two papers given at this meeting. Progress since the last quarterly report included completion of the echelle comparator calibration, and the successful production and photographing of the desired spect… more

High Temperature Scaling Behavior of Zirconium : Second Technical Progress Report

Description: This technical report summarized studies in the high temperature scaling of zirconium, and covers the period from March 1, 1955 to December 15, 1955. One technical progress report covered the progress of the investigation from April 1, 1953 to march 1, 1955. The previous work was concerned largely with the scaling behavior of zirconium in air, pure oxygen, pure nitrogen and mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen. The major finding arising from these studies was that the peculiar scaling behavior of zi… more

Penetration of the Gut Wall by Intestinal Bacteria After X-Irradiation. Progress Report June 1, 1955 to January 31, 1956

Description: Factors affecting bacterial invasion from the intestinal tract in x-irradiated mice were investigated. P. morganii was administered in the drinking water on the seventh day following exposure to 600 r total-body x-irradiation. Mortality increased from about 40% following irradiation alone to about 62% after radiation and bacterial challenge together. No effect on mortality was produced by immunization with P. morganii prior to irradiation or injection of spleen homogenates from normal mice shor… more

Description: A gage employing a narrow "pencil" of beta-rays has been developed to determine the thickness of films used a cyclotron targets. The instrument, pictured in Figure 1, allows an estimate of the evenness of films a few mg/cm thick by reproducibly scanning the sample with a collimated beta-ray beam 3/32 in. in diameter.

Injection Trajectories and Beam Matching for the Cambridge Electron Accelerator

Description: "ABS>Injection trajectories were calculated for different injection conditions for the Cambridge Electron Accelerator, considering also the effect of magnetic fringing fields. The general problem of matching the emittance of the linac to the acceptance of the synchrotron in the transversal phase space is considered, and it is shown that this can be done by a set of two quadrupole lenses. In order to eliminate rudial betatron oscillations due to energy deviations of the injected particles, a pul… more

A Report on the Kinematics of High Energy Electron Scattering

Description: "A convenient summary is given of useful formulas on the kinematics of high energy electron scattering together with a derivation of the relevant formulas for transforming from the center of mass to the laboratory system such parameters as scattering cross sections. The formulas derived hold for any two- body collision: the approximation (m = 0) employed for the electron scattering calculations is rigorously true for the elastic scattering of photons."
