Geothermal resources in California: potentials and problems

Description: The technology, cost and potential of geothermal resources in California are examined. The production of power from dry stream fields is expanding in Northern California, at The Geysers, at costs that compare favorably with alternate means of generation. The possibility exists that economic production of power can be started in the Imperial Valley, but numerous issues remain to be resolved; chief among them is the demonstration that commercially valuable aquifers indeed exist. The production of… more

Acoustic flaw triangulation on a thin spherical shell: an analytical solution

Description: An analytical solution for acoustic flaw triangulation on thin spherical shells has been prepared. A FORTRAN program is provided which takes as input the differences in the arrival times of acoustic energy at the transducers and evaluates the spherical coordinates of the flaw. Only three experimental time differences need be measured. For this measurement, four transducers are required. One transducer is placed at (R, 0, 0) in spherical coordinates; the other three are spaced 90 degrees apart a… more

Lifetime measurements in /sup 38/Cl and /sup 40/K. [Lifetime, transitions, strengths, J,. pi. ]

Description: Electromagnetic transition rates within the /sup 38/Cl and /sup 40/K nuclei were studied through lifetime measurements with a double-coincidence variant of the Doppler-shift-attenuation method. In /sup 40/K the excitation energies (MeV) and measured mean lives (psec) are 0.800 (0.56 +- 0.13), 0.891 (1.53/sub -0.35//sup +0.40/), 1.959 (0.7 +- 0.5), 2.047 (0.49 +- 0.10), 2.070 (0.4/sub -0.2//sup +0.3/), 2.103 (0.54 +- 0.15), 2.261 (0.05 +- 0.05), 2.290 (0.33/sub -0.20//sup +0.40/), 2.291 (0.31/su… more

Working Performance of Focused Ultrasonic Search Units Utilizing a Modified 725 Immerscope

Description: The purpose and method employed in-house to quickly ascertain instrument-coupled working performance of focused search-unit piezoelectric materials of similar physical characteristics is illustrated by comparative presentation of data obtained for lithium sulfate and lead metaniobate "units" utilizing a custom built 725 Immerscope.

A Ruggedized Ultrasensitive Field Air Sampler for Differentially Determining Tritium Oxide and Gas in Ambient Air Atmosphere

Description: The instrument described is an operational, practical, ruggedized, ultrasensitive, tritium field air sampler assembled for the simultaneous, differential sampling of the environmental air for tritium oxide and elemental tritium. The system uses hardware assembled and packaged in such manner as to facilitate use in the field as well as in the laboratory. The sampling system occupies relatively small space and is simple to operate. The detection sensitivity approaches tritium background levels an… more

Biomedical engineering support. Quarterly progress report, September 15, 1971--December 15, 1971

Description: The power input to the air drive line, input to the air chamber, input to the pumping diaphragm and output from the Kwan-Gett artificial heart has been measured at different atrial pressures with a constant frequency of 120 beats per minute and constant mean arterial pressure of 100 mm Hg. These measurements were made in vitro. The various efficiencies, cardiac outputs and pressures corresponding to the power measurements were also determined. (auth)

A Technique for Quantifying Forest Stands for Management Evaluations

Description: "In this study, a system for describing the three-dimensional geometry of trees and stands is presented. The system consists of two survey instruments, a theodolite and transit, and basic triangulation principles. A spotting laser has recently been added to the system to facilitate the spotting of the tree nodes to be surveyed" (p. ix). Results show significant differences in tree productivity as a result of fertilization and changes in heights, bole diameters, etc.
