Measurements of ICRF (ion cyclotron range of frequencies) loading with a ridged waveguide coupler on PLT

Description: An ICRF ridged waveguide coupler has been installed on PLT for measurements of plasma loading. The coupler was partially filled with TiO/sub 2/ dielectric in order to sufficiently lower the cutoff frequency and utilized a tapered ridge for improved matching. Vacuum field measurements indicated a single propagating mode in the coupler and emphasized the importance of considering the fringing fields at the mouth of the waveguide. Low power experiments were carried out at 72.6 and 95.0 MHz without… more

Results of the Radiological Survey at Greg's Auto Emporium, 60 State Highway 46, Lodi, New Jersey (LJ089)

Description: Maywood Chemical Works (MCW) of Maywood, New Jersey, generated process wastes and residues associated with the production and refining of thorium and thorium compounds from monazite ores from 1916 to 1956. MCW supplied rare earth metals and thorium compounds to the Atomic Energy Commission and various other government agencies from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s. Area residents used the sandlike waste from this thorium extraction process mixed with tea and cocoa leaves as mulch in their yards.… more

Salinity variations and chemical compositions of waters in the Frio Formation, Texas Gulf Coast. Annual report

Description: Waters produced from sandstone reservoirs of the deep Frio Formation exhibit spatial variations in chemical composition that roughly coincide with the major tectonic elements (Houston and Rio Grande Embayments, San Marcos Arch) and corresponding depositional systems (Houston and Norias deltas, Greta-Carancahua barrier/strandplain system) that were respectively active along the upper, lower, and middle Texas Coast during Frio deposition. Within an area, salinities are usually depth dependent, an… more

Scaling neutron absorbed dose distributions from one medium to another

Description: Central axis depth dose (CADD) and off-axis absorbed dose ratio (OAR) measurements were made in water, muscle and whole skeletal bone TE-solutions, mineral oil and glycerin with a clinical neutron therapy beam. These measurements show that, for a given neutron beam quality and field size, there is a universal CADD distribution at infinity if the depth in the phantom is expressed in terms of appropriate scaling lengths. These are essentially the kerma-weighted neutron mean free paths in the medi… more

Electron cyclotron heating in tokamaks

Description: Tokamaks may be efficiently heated at electron cyclotron resonance by launching of the extraordinary wave from the inside of the torus with a simple waveguide aperture. For typical tokamak parameters, 90% of the incident energy is absorbed in one traversal of the resonant surface. There is an effective maximum density for linear heating at the point where the plasma frequency is equal to the cyclotron frequency. The bulk of the plasma electrons is heated, increasing the perpendicular energy wit… more

Shawnee test program: TVA Shawnee Test Facility. Technical progress report, April 6-May 6, 1981

Description: The test obtective for April was to evaluate sodium thiosulfate in limestone scrubber slurry as inhibitor of sulfite oxidation. The resulting effect on saturation levels of calcium sulfate (CaSO/sub 4/.2 H/sub 2/O; gypsum) and scaling in the system was of prime importance. As an antioxidant, S/sub 2/O/sub 3//sup =/ functions as a scale inhibitor by reducing SO/sub 4//sup =/, a known scale former. To meet the test objective, the scrubber was operated in a scaling mode as a base case; finally, th… more

Application of a time-series methodology to Federal program allocations. [Modified Box and Jenkins method]

Description: Time-series analysis provides a useful tool in the evaluation of public policy outputs. It is shown that the general Box and Jenkins method, when extended to allow for multiple interrupts, enables researchers simultaneously to examine changes in drift and level of a series, and to select the best fit model for the series. As applied to urban renewal allocations, results show significant changes in the level of the series, corresponding to changes in party control of the Executive. No support is… more
