AN IBM 7090 FORTRAN PROGRAM FOR ASME UNFIRED PRESSURE VESSEL DESIGN AND PRELIMINARY COST ESTIMATION

Description: An IBM 7090 FORTRAN program was written for the preliminary design and cost estimation of unfired pressure vessels with or without a jacket. Both vessel and jacket designs conform to the 1959 ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Unfired Pressure Vessels. Vessels and jackets from 5 in. pipe through 84 in. o.d. and 1/4 in. through 1 1/2 in. in metal thickness may be designed by this program as written. Total vessel cost is the sum of metal and fabrication costs, each on a weight ba… more

Ion-optical studies for improved ion transmission in multistage isotope-ratio mass spectrometers

Description: Theoretical and experimental ion-optical studies of multistage isotope-ratio mass spectrometers were conducted to determine what improvement in ion transmission efficiency might be attainable through design changes. The computer program GIOS (General Ion Optical Systems) was used to perform theoretical calculations of focusing properties and ion transmission efficiency. Actual transmission through multiple-sector instruments was determined from measurements of the ion beam vertical profile at t… more

Mechanical properties of LX-10-1. Process Development Endeavor No. 105

Description: Two Holston lots of LX-10-1 were evaluated for mechanical properties. The average 21/sup 0/C tensile failure stress-strain values for Lot 711-1 and 711-2 were 2.32 MPa at 0.15% and 2.07 MPa at 0.18%, respectively. The failure stress range for both lots was approximately 0.4 MPa at 74 C to 5.6 MPa at -37C. Several additional pressing cycles were required to obtain a density of 1.865 Mg/m/sup 3/ for Lot 711-1 material. The additional cycles appear to have increased the tensile failure stress of L… more

Application of the graphical unitary group approach to the energy second derivative for CI wave functions via the coupled perturbed CI equations

Description: Analytic derivatives of the potential energy for Self-Consistent-Field (SCF) wave functions have been developed in recent years and found to be useful tools. The first derivative for configuration interaction (CI) wave functions is also available. This work details the extension of analytic methods to energy second derivatives for CI wave functions. The principal extension required for second derivatives is evaluation of the first order change in the CI wave function with respect to a nuclear p… more

Dynamic modeling of transport and positional control of tokamaks

Description: We describe here a numerical model of a free boundary axisymmetric tokamak plasma and its associated control systems. The plasma is modeled with a hybrid method using two-dimensional velocity and flux functions with surface-averaged MHD equations describing the evolution of the adiabatic invariants. Equations are solved for the external circuits and for the effects of eddy currents in nearby conductors. The method is verified by application to several test problems and used to simulate the form… more

FAST BREEDER REACTOR THERMOCOUPLE DEVELOPMENT.

Description: Studies of very high-temperature thermocouple characteristics for instrumentation and electrical components used in fast breeder reactors showed that the thermoelectric emf produced along BeO, HfO{sub 2}, or ThO{sub 2} insulators can affect the output of the thermoelements. Bare-wire thermocouples are influenced by environment. Radiation effects on W versus W - Re thermocouples in the ORR after ~ 2 months in a 1.2 x 10{sup 14}n/cm{sup 2}-sec thermal and 2.1 x 10{sup 13}n/cm{sup 2}-sec fast flux… more

Mark I 1/5-scale boiling water reactor pressure suppression experiment facility report

Description: An accurate Mark I /sup 1///sub 5/-scale, boiling water reactor (BWR), pressure suppression facility was designed and constructed at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLL) in 11 months. Twenty-seven air tests using the facility are described. Cost was minimized by utilizing equipment borrowed from other LLL programs. The total value of borrowed equipment exceeded the program's budget of $2,020,000. Substantial flexibility in the facility was used to permit independent variation in the drywell pres… more

Study of the health effects of bicycling in an urban atmosphere. Final report

Description: This report analyzes data on the health effects of bicycling in an urban environment through intensive study of ten healthy male subjects bicycling or driving in systematically varied conditions in the streets of Washington, D.C. Evaluation criteria for available technology and instrumentation are included and a methodology is developed for route selection. Specific air pollutants (carbon monoxide, ozone, sulfates, nitrates, and particulates) are measured concurrently with exposure and subseque… more

Manual for COMSYN: A orbit integration code for the study of beam dynamics in compact synchrotrons

Description: COMSYN is a numerical integration code which is written for the study and design of the compact synchrotrons. An improved 4th-order Runge-Kutta method is used in COMSYN to integrate the exact equations of motion in a rectangular coordinate system. The magnetic field components of the dipole B{sub x}, B{sub y} and B{sub z} can be obtained from either measurement or directly computed data (MAGNUS, TOSCA). A spline interpolation method is then used to get the field value at the particle position. … more

PHYSICO-CHEMICAL STUDIES OF Fe--Cr--Al-CLAD FUEL SYSTEMS.

Description: Reactions which can occur between oxidation-resistant Fe - CR - AL base alloys and UO{sub 2} at 500 to 1200 deg C are discussed. Aluminum in the Fe - Cr - Al-base cladding reduces the UO{sub 2} in the cermet fuels at 1000 to 1200 deg C. The U dissolves and diffuses through the cladding and is converted to an oxide. Oxygen combines with Al forming Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} which inhibits Al diffusion into the UO{sub 2}. The diffusion for Al in Cr leads to the development of a Cr barrier and reduces the … more

Reactor thermal-hydraulic FY 1986 status report for the multimegawatt Space Nuclear Power Program

Description: PNL's 1986 activities can be divided into three basic areas: code assessment, correlation assessment and experimental activities. The ultimate goal of all these activities is developing computer codes and verifying their use to perform the thermal-hydraulic analysis and design of the reactor core and plenum of the various proposed concepts. To perform this task as assessment is made of existing computer codes, models, correlations, and microgravity experimental data.

TRU Waste Management Program cost/schedule optimization analysis

Description: The cost/schedule optimization task is a necessary function to insure that program goals and plans are optimized from a cost and schedule aspect. Results of this study will offer DOE information with which it can establish, within institutional constraints, the most efficient program for the long-term management and disposal of contact handled transuranic waste (CH-TRU). To this end, a comprehensive review of program cost/schedule tradeoffs has been made, to identify any major cost saving oppor… more
