Description: AMAX Research Development Center (AMAX R D) has been investigating methods for improving the reactivity and durability of the zinc ferrite desulfurization sorbent. Solubility and superconductivity in RE(Ba sub 2-x RE sub x )Cu sub 3 O sub 7+. delta. (RE = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy)

Description: Solid solutions of RE(Ba{sub 2-x}RE{sub x})Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7- {delta}}(RE=Nd,Sm,Eu,Gd,Dy) for x=0 to x=0.5 have been investigated. X-ray and resistivity measurements show that there exists a solid solution region, through which, the structure changes from orthorhombic to tetragonal and the superconducting properties are depressed. Application of a Multigrid Method to a Buoyancy-Induced Flow Problem

Description: The numerical prediction of buoyancy-induced flows provides special difficulties for standard numerical techniques associated with velocity-buoyancy coupling. We present a multigrid algorithm based upon a novel relaxation scheme that handles this coupling correctly. Numerical experiments have been performed that show that this approach is reasonably efficient and robust for a range of Rayleigh numbers and a variety of cycling strategies.

A search for supersymmetric electrons with the Mark II detector at PEP (Positron Electron Project)

Description: An experimental search for selectrons, the supersymmetric partner of the electron, has been performed at the PEP storage ring at SLAC using the Mark II detector. The experimental search done was based upon hypothetical reaction in e/sup +/e/sup -/ interactions at PEP center of mass energies of 29 GeV. Design of the D0 overpass dispersion correction

Description: The existing D0 overpass induces a vertical dispersion wave around the Main ring with dispersion amplitudes of around 1.6 to 1.8 m. There are two major reasons to eliminate or reduce vertical dispersion induced by the D0 overpass: to lower the beam momentum dependence on vertical positions which had not existed before the overpass; and to raise the Tevatron luminosity by eliminating the dispersion mismatch between the main Ring and Tevatron. 20 figs., 1 tab.

Fermi surface and effective masses for the heavy-electron superconductor UPt sub 3

Description: Local-density-approximation (LDA) calculations for the Fermi-surface extremal cross-sectional areas of UPt{sub 3} are presented and compared to deHaas-van Alphen experiments of Taillefer et al. The topology of the calculated surfaces is in excellent agreement with experiment and allows a determination of the directional dependence of the anisotropic mass-renormalization factor. Determination of alpha/sub s/ from energy-energy correlations in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV

Description: We have studied the energy-energy correlation in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation into hadrons at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV using the Mark II detector at PEP. We find to O(..cap alpha../sub s//sup 2/) that ..cap alpha../sub s/ = 0.158 +- .003 +- .008 if hadronization is described by string fragmentation. Independent fragmentation schemes give ..cap alpha../sub s/ = .10 - .14, and give poor agreement with the data. A leading-log shower fragmentation model is found to describe the data well.

A neutral-beam diagnostic for fast confined alpha particles in a burning plasma: Application on CIT (Compact Ignition Tokamak)

We review one- and two-electron-capture methods using energetic neutral beams, and provide quantitative estimates of signal level for a two-electron-capture method applicable to CIT. Reactivity and isotopic composition of spent PWR (pressurized-water-reactor) fuel as a function of initial enrichment, burnup, and cooling time

Description: This study presents the reactivity loss of spent PWR fuel due to burnup in terms of the infinite lattice multiplications factor, k/sub infinity/. Calculations were performed using the SAS2 and CSAS1 control modules of the SCALE system. The k/sub infinity/ values calculated for all combinations of six enrichments, seven burnups, and five cooling times. Design and construction of a Vertex Chamber and measurement of the average B-Hadron lifetime

Description: Four parameters describe the mixing of the three quark generations in the Standard Model of the weak charged current interaction. ATHENA radiation model

Automated saturated standard cell intercomparison

Description: A cost effective, highly efficient, and automatic method of intercomparing standard cells has been sought after and implemented, utilizing computer control and a commercially available scanner. Characterization of aerodynamic drag force on single particles: Final report
