Nuclear Battery-Thermocouple Type Summary Report

Description: The potential usefulness of approximately 1300 radioactive isotopes as a heat source for the thermoelectric generator was investigated. Only 47 were found to have the proper characteristics of high specific activity and usable haif-life combined with an easily absorbable radiation. These isotopes are discussed showing possible sources of supply, the hazards involved, and the expected performance. Three large Po/sup 210/ heat sources were designed and constructed (for battery use), including one… more

Research and Development Reports for Sodium to Sodium Intermediate Heat Exchanger and Sodium to Water Steam Generator

Description: Results are presented of research and development work performed in conjunction with the 70-Mw design of a sodium-to- sodium intermediate heat exchanger and a sodium-to-water steam generator. Kanigen plating was substituted for Inconel overlays. A program to evaluate this plating was undertaken. Elimination of tube end ferrules, mechanical behavior of sine wave tubes, tube-to- tube sheet welded connections, metallurgical examination of bimetallic tubes, transition weld test, bayonet tube test, … more

Periodic Intercalibration of Temperature Sensing Elements, Core I, Seed I. Test Results T-641306

Description: BS>Intercalibration data for various temperature sensing elements in the reactor coolant system are obtained and compared with calculated source activity levels and observed channel levels. The readings of 20 of the 62 core thermocouples were either less than 400 deg F, which was off scale on the recorder, or were plus or minus 20 deg F from the calibrating resistance thermometer temperatures. The remainder of the readings were within plus or minus 3% of the temperatures of the calibrating ther… more

Periodic Radiation Survey of Reactor Plant Container and Components After Shutdown "F" Survey. Core I, Seed 1. Test Results (T-612076). Section 4

Description: An investigation was conducted to obtain measurements of radiation levels inside the hemispherical heads of the 1-B heat exchanger. The radiation levels were measured at the handholes on two occasions with an interval of 640 hrs between them. A very large increase was noted and could be explained only by the possibility that the measurement survey points were not identical. (J.R.D.)

A RESONANCE IN THE Lambda pi SYSTEM

Description: The authors report a study of the reaction K{sup -} + p {yields} {Lambda}{sup 0} + {pi}{sup +} + {pi}{sup -} produced by 1.15 Gev/c K{sup -} mesons and observed in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory's 15-in. hydrogen bubble chamber. A preliminary report of these results was presented at the 1960 Rochester Conference. The beam was purified by two velocity spectrometers. A hyperon/observed during the run and the preliminary cross sections for various K{sup -} reactions at 1.15 Bev/c have been repo… more

THE ORIGIN OF LIFE ON EARTH AND ELSEWHERE. II

Description: The synthesis of relatively complex organic molecules by ionizing and radical mechanisms (induced by high energy radiations, ultraviolet and electric discharge) from methane, ammonia, water, and hydrogen is described, both theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that the molecules which tend to be formed under such random conditions are the very ones which today are the common building blocks in the biological reconstruction of organic material. Such molecules are the amino acids, the sim… more

The glove box fire control studies: Interim report

Description: This report describes efforts to develop a safe, practical method to extinguish fires inside contaminated gloveboxes. Oil, trash, and metal fires were set to test various materials and techniques. Dry chemical extinguishers and MgO sand proved more practical than flooding the boxes with either CO/sub 2/ or argon. Gas replacement techniques pressurized the boxes and greatly increased the risk of outside contamination. 5 figs. (TEM)

Purification of mercury contaminated lithium hydroxide

Description: The object of this investigation was to determine an economical method of preparing pure lithium hydroxide from a mercury-contaminated lithium hydroxide monohydrate salt presently produced as a waste product. Pure lithium hydroxide has application for chemical removal of carbon dioxide from air and general open market sale if the mercury contamination is reduced to approximately one part per billion. Because of the uncertainty of the form of the mercury contaminant, different purification metho… more

Production test IP-363-A irradiation of ZR-2 jacketed enriched single tube fuel elements in the KER loops

Description: The objective of this production test is to evaluate the behavior during irradiation of nominally 1.739 inch OD., 1.074 inch ID., Zircaloy-2 jacketed single tube fuel elements with brazed end closures at operating conditions somewhat more severe than those expected for N Reactor fuel element outer tubes. Enriched single tube elements with brazed end closures and modified fuel element supports are authorized for irradiation in the KEG loops to an exposure no higher than 4000 MWD/T. A typical loa… more

Redox Birch recovery scope design. Revision 1

Description: The scope design for Birch recovery at Redox was presented in September 12, 1960. Final plutonium purification and decontamination by anion exchange in a pulsed-bed contactor under development by Hanford Laboratories was proposed. Potential advantages of low cost and improved operability were anticipated from the new contactor; when these were not demonstrated in the development work in time to meet project schedules, it was decided to revert to the Higgins-type contactor for which considerable… more
