Comparison of the performance of a helicopter-type ram-jet engine under various centrifugal loadings

Description: Report presenting an investigation of an 18-foot-radius helicopter rotor powered by tip-mounted ramjet engines in the helicopter test tower. The engine performance is compared with the performance determined in a previous investigation of a 9-foot-radius rotor with the same engines at similar speeds but with twice the centrifugal forces. Results regarding the propulsive characteristics, minimum specific fuel consumption and corresponding propulsive thrust, and operational characteristics are pr… more

Rocket-Model Investigation to Determine the Hinge-Moment and Normal-Force Properties of a Full-Span, Constant-Chord, Partially Balanced Trailing-Edge Control on a 60 Degree Clipped Delta Wing Between Mach Numbers of 0.50 and 1.26

Description: Report presenting a free-flight investigation of a rocket-powered research model to determine the hinge-moment and normal-force characteristics of a trailing-edge control on a delta wing between Mach numbers of 0.50 and 1.26. The hinge-line location of 40 percent control chord satisfactorily reduced the high hinge moments associated with plain flap-type controls. Results regarding hinge moments and normal force are provided.

Summary - Bevatron Research Meeting II

Description: The operational characteristics of the Cosmotron were reviewed in brief. Since a rather complete account of this machine is now available in the September 1953 issue of Rev. Sci. Inst., this summary will include only the more recent utilization of the machine as a research instrument.

Welded Closures for Fuel Elements

Description: From abstract: "The inert-gas metal-arc welding process was used to determine weldability studies of various aluminum alloys that are being considered for use as can materials. The solid-phase and induction welding processes were also investigated for making can closures."

The Effectiveness of Spray Cooling

Description: Abstract: "A possible method of cooling a liquid-fuel reactor is by spraying liquid metal through the liquid fuel, and then circulating the liquid metal through a heat exchanger. To evaluate the effectiveness of this cooling method, a few simple experiments were made with mercury sprayed through water. On the basis of the results, it was concluded that this method was intrinsically a low-power-density method, which could not find application except where a low fissionable-material inventory was… more

Lunar Height Changes in the E-Layer

Description: Abstract: "The height changes produced by vertical electronic diffusion in the presence of negative ions are examined in some detail. Application of the results to the E-layer shows that a previous qualitative discussion remains valid."

The less familiar elements in the Atomic Energy program

Description: Many factors are responsible for the rapid growth of analytical chemistry during the past ten to fifteen years (This report was written in 1953). One of the most important of these factors is the greatly increased significance to present day chemistry of many elements that in the recent past were principally chemical curiosities. Since the Atomic Energy program is concerned with many such elements, it is of interest to discuss the cause for this concern and the resulting effect on the field of … more

Preliminary Study of the Pile Effluent Piping System

Description: In order to carry out the program of increased pile operating levels either tube outlet temperature or the water flows must be increased. This program proposes a considerable increase in both the pile effluent water flow and temperature. Consequently an investigation was started of problems that might be encountered in the pile effluent system. Later, a decision was made that the portion of this investigation dealing with the effects of increased water flow would be handled by the Pile Material… more

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis. XXI. The Cyclic Regenerationof Carbon Dioxide Acceptor

Description: Photosynthesizing plants have been exposed to C{sup 14}O{sub 2} for short periods of time (0.4 to 15 sec.) and the products of carbon dioxide reduction analyzed by paper chromatography and radio autography. Methods have been developed for the degradation of ribulose and sedoheptulose. These sugars, obtained as their phosphate esters from the above C{sup 14}O{sub 2} exposures and from other experiments, have been degraded and their distribution of radiocarbon determined. The distribution of radi… more

Bevatron Research Meeting I - Bevatron as a Research Instrument

Description: The Bevatron status is: (1) Physical structure of magnet now assembled and being tested. Initial pulsing to rated field currents indicate that magnet is performing as designed. Currents of the order of 8500 amps peak have already been rendered. (About 15,000 gauss). (2) Pumpdown time to approximately 10{sup -5} mm Hg is of the order of 24 hours at present but is expected to improve to 12-15 hours as the high vapor pressure solvents are removed. Lofgren and Brobeck expect that it will be possibl… more

BEVATRON RESEARCH MEETING IV - BEVATRON TARGETS AND PROBES

Description: The targets and probes will be introduced 6-inches below the median plane so that adequate mechanical support can be effectively utilized without reducing the aperture. Probe heads will be of such configuration as to allow monitoring of any desired vertical strip of the aperture. It is probable that some space will be available in the quadrants after first performance tests have been on the machine. No targets or probes will be located in that 1-foot x 4-foot aperture initially. Provision will … more

BEVATRON RESEARCH MEETING III - BEVATRON THEORY

Description: Despite the essentially independent development of the Cosmotron and Bevatron, these two accelerators have general specifications which are the same within a factor of 2-3 in their pertinent characteristics. An electron analogue of the Bevatron would be an electron synchrotron operating in the 5 kev to 3 Mev range.
