K-Meson Degeneracies

Description: Abstract: "Some discussion is given of the possible real and charge parity degeneracies of K mesons. An explicit model is used to illustrate the superselection rule, which forbids the K meson to be a mixture of intrinsic parity states and at the same time conserve parity in decay. The discussion is extended to charge parity; the 01, 02 scheme appears to be more than an exercise in polarization phenomenons and to involve a radically new basic assumption--namely, that the 0-0 and 0-(-0) are degen… more

Scatterbrain: An Automated Experiment on the 90-Inch Cyclotron

Description: Summary: By controlling certain elements within a vacuum chamber from an external station, a charged particle experiment is performed without opening the chamber, thereby saving considerable time and labor. By pre-programming the experimental sequence on the external controls, the experiment can be performed from beginning to end with a minimum of operator attention. The data collected can be read out automatically on a punched paper tape for subsequent transmission to a digital computer.

Radiative Capture of Protons in Ne²⁰

Description: Abstract: "A preliminary measurement of the Ne²⁰(p,γ)Na²¹ reaction cross section has been made. Targets were prepared by bombarding aluminum targets with neon ions. The neon concentration in the target was determined by elastic scattering of 1.5-Mev-protons. The yield of positrons from the reaction Ne²⁰(p,γ)Na²¹(β)Ne²¹ was identified by the 23-second half life of Na²¹."

Pulsed Neutron Experiments With Fast Assemblies

Description: "The pulsed source technique consists of introducing repeated short bursts of neutrons into a subcritical assembly, and following the decay of the leakage flux as a function of time...It is noted that plotting the decay constant as a function of buckling gives an apparently accurate way to extrapolate to prompt critical. The pulsed source technique can also be used to calibrate control rod and poison worth, and will give some estimate of the prompt neutron lifetime."

Cyclotron Resonance Heating of a Deuterium Plasma

Description: Abstract: "The energy gained by a deuterium plasma, from a three megacycle per second radiofrequency field, was studied experimentally. A static magnetic field, in the form of a "mirror", was used. The coil of an rf resonant circuit, placed at the center of the machine produced a time-varying magnetic field parallel to the static field. This, in turn, induced an electrical field, in an azmuthal direction, which acted on the ions. When this was in synchronism with the cyclotron frequency, the io… more
