MEASUREMENT OF POLARIZATION IN pi- p ELASTIC SCATTERING FROM 229TO 3 90 MeV

Description: The polarization parameter in elastic {pi}{sup -}p scattering has been measured, at the Berkeley 184 synchrocyclotron,l with the use of a polarized proton target. At 318, 337 and 390 Mev incident pion kinetic energy, the angular range from 70{sup o} to 180{sup o} in the center of mass system was covered. At 229 Mev polarization measurements were made in the angular range 150{sup o} to 180{sup o}. Phase shift analyses using these and other published data were made at the two lowest energies.

Aerospace nuclear safety report for August 1967

Description: The AEC Safety Branch advised that the present outlook for a potential mission using four modified SNAP-3 type generators is rather negative. Drop tests of four SNAP-19 intact reentry heat source capsules were conducted at the Tonopah Test Range. A preliminary GE SNAP-27 safety analysis was reviewed. Three arc tunnel tests were conducted at low heat fluxes. Debris were collected on downrange impactors from all tests. The rapid helium depressurization test on fuel microspheres was conducted by B… more

Post-irradiation examination of in-pile stress-rupture specimens (ORR S-2 and ORR S-3)

Description: Hastelloy-N fuel cladding tube specimens were stress-rupture-tested in-pile at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Two cladding heats were tested at 1400/sup 0/F; hoop stresses ranged from 8000 psi to 26,000 psi. The tubes were then shipped to the Atomics International Hot Laboratory where cladding visual examination, dimensional measurement, and metallographic analysis were performed. Average cladding creep ductility was 1.2%. Cladding failures were intergranular, with some secondary cracking n… more

Determination of uniaxial mechanical properties of unirradiated and irradiated Hastelloy-N bar and biaxial stress-rupture properties of chromized and coated unirradiated Hastelloy-N

Description: Short-time tensile tests were conducted on irradiated (2 x 10/sup 20/ nvt) and unirradiated Hastelloy-N bar from heats 5911 and 6252. No significant difference in mechanical properties was noted between the two heats. The 1200/sup 0/F ultimate tensile strength was decreased by irradiation from 65 to 80 ksi and 48 to 52 ksi. The 1400/sup 0/F ultimate tensile strength was decreased from 45 to 51 ksi to 32 to 34 ksi. The yield strength was not greatly affected by irradiation at either 1200 or 1400… more

Low-cycle fatigue testing of irradiated Hastelloy-N (ORR S-2)

Description: Hastelloy-N strip specimens were irradiated in the Oak Ridge Research Reactor at temperatures of 1330 to 1390/sup 0/F, to neutron doses of 1.8 to 2.6 x 10/sup 20/ nvt thermal, l.4 to 2.0 x 10/sup 19/ nvt fast. Twelve irradiated specimens were selected for testing from each of two heats, 0143 (0.010 in. thick) and 5911 (0.015 in.). Six specimens in each heat were as-received, the other six were as-processed. Processing steps included chromizing, a simulated coating firing cycle, diffusion treatm… more

Production test-080 - physics tests at D reactor deactivation interim report - experimental data

Description: Production Test-080 authorized the conduct of certain physics tests during the deactivation of D Reactor. The primary objective of the test was to measure certain physics parameters which could be used to check current computational models. In this report are presented a brief chronology of the tests and a tabulation of the experimental data. In general, data processing has not progressed beyond simple reduction of the raw experimental data to a form more easily used in future analytical compar… more

Manufacturing Section semiannual summary report, period ending June 30, 1967

Description: In this fourth semiannual issue, the reactor and power data from the Hanford Production Reactors are shown for the six-month period January through June, 1967, together with data for the three preceding six-month periods. For comparison purposes, the two years of experience will continue to be shown by dropping and adding a six- month period with each semiannual issue.

Pacific Northwest Laboratory monthly activities report, August 1967

Description: This monthly activity report summarizes work done by the staff of Battelle-Northwest in support of the Division of Production and assistance programs directed by the Hanford Plant. The report is divided into four sections: direct AEC sponsored programs; assistance to Douglas United Nuclear; assistance to Isochem; and technical assistance to the Hanford Plant. The work is wide ranging, from environmental monitoring and remediation, to process development, fuel fabrication and studies, metallurgy… more

Reaction matrix in nuclear shell theory

Description: Lectures are given in which the nuclear shell model is discussed as a link between the properties of complex nuclei and the free-nucleon interaction. A version of the shell model is derived from nuclear many-body theory, and also this version is compared and contrasted with phenomenological shell theory. Attention is focused on oxygen-18 and fluorine-18. 76 references. (JFP)

SOME THOUGHTS ON STABILITY IN NONLINEAR PERIODIC FOCUSING SYSTEMS

Description: A brief discussion is given of the long-term stability of particle motions through periodic focusing structures containing lumped nonlinear elements. A method is presented whereby one can specify the nonlinear elements in such a way as to generate a variety of structures in which the motion has long-term stability.

HRT PROCESS FLOWSHEETS (REVISION IV)

Description: The first four process flowsheets were drawn to show the division between the high and low pressure fuel and blanket systems. This necessitated the repetition of certain equipment which fell at the dividing points, such as the letdown heat exchangers, the feed pumps, etc. They were also designed to make it possible to cut the sheets and join them to make one large flowsheet without repetition of equipment or lines. In general the flowsheet line numbers on the fuel side are a 100 series and the … more

Description: Declassifled 28 Nov 1973. The S10FS-3 Reactor was disassembled and examined. The core was removed from the core vessel and all 37 fuel elements were subjected to a nondestructive screening examination followed by a detailed examination of selected elements. The screening examination consisted of visual inspection, dimensional measurement, eddy current scanning for hydrogen distribution, and gamma scanning. The subsequent detaiIed examination of selected elements included fission gas measurement… more
