Progress Report on Refining of MgX and Other Uranium-Bearing Materials

Description: From abstract: "Results are presented which suggest the possibility of satisfactorily extracting uranium from pitchblende feeds with neutral ether, without the necessity of removing sulfate, by the addition of a sufficient quantity of iron to the feed." Other factors' effects on extraction were tested and arsenic was traced throughout extraction.

Preliminary Report on the Carnotite Deposits of the Old Leyden Coal Mine, Jefferson County, Colorado

Description: From introduction: Mapping, sampling, and radiometric reconnaissance of the uranium-bearing deposits in the Laramie formation in the vicinity of the Old Leyden coal mine, sec. 28, T. 2 S., R. 71 W., Jefferson County, Colorado (fig. 1), was completed August 10, 1951. Topographic and geologic maps were made of areas approximately 6,000 feet by 3,000 feet (scale 1:2h00), and 1,200 feet by 800 feet (scale 1:600). Underground workings at three clay mines and at the Old Leyden mine were also mapped. … more

Large-Scale Geologic Guides to Carnotite Deposits in the Uravan and Gateway Districts, Montrose and Mesa Counties, Colorado

Description: Abstract: Results of detailed mapping of the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Morrison formation in the Uravan and Gateway districts, Montrose and Mesa Counties, Colo., suggest that large areas containing both lenticular bedding in the ore-bearing sandstone and persistently altered mudstone beneath the sandstone are generally favorable for carnotite deposits.

Heating in the Graphite Due to a Cadmium Control Rod

Description: From introduction: "This paper employs a multigroup method similar to that of J. S. Story, AERE-TR-177 to calculate, for cylindrical geometry, that heat energy source density in graphite due to absorption and Compton scattering of those gammas produced by neutron capture in a water filled cadmium control rod."

Results of Diamond Drilling Mesas 1, 2, 3, and 4, Lukachukai Mountains, Northeastern Arizona

Description: From purpose and scope: Diamond drill exploration of the Lukachukai district was undertaken to find minable bodies of uranium ore and to determine whether sufficient reserves were present to warrant construction of a local mill. A minimum of 30,000 feet and a maximum of 50,000 feet of drilling were assigned to block out ore in the discovery area, Mesa I (pl. 1.). It was anticipated that some of the footage might be used to test Mesa II should the area become accessible. With access to Mesas II … more

A flight evaluation of the longitudinal stability characteristics associated with the pitch-up of a swept-wing airplane in maneuvering flight at transonic speeds

Description: This report presents the results of flight measurements of longitudinal stability and control characteristics made on a swept-wing jet aircraft to determine the origin of the pitch-up encountered in maneuvering flight at transonic speeds. For this purpose measurements were made of elevator angle, tail angle of attack, and wing-fuselage pitching moments (obtained from measurements of the balancing tail loads).

Examples of three representative types of airfoil-section stall at low speed

Description: Report presenting force, moment, pressure-distribution, and boundary-layer measurements for a series of five airfoil sections. The stalling characteristics of the three airfoil sections at low speeds can be separated into three types. A deeper discussion of the role of boundary-layer flow and separation processes in relation to stalling and the sensitivity of stall to factors that influence boundary-layer growth is provided.

Study of Vortex Shedding as Related to Self-Excited Torsional Oscillations of an Airfoil

Description: Note presenting the results of the experimental investigation of the self-excited torsional oscillation of an NACA 0006 airfoil suspended elastically. The relationship between the torsional oscillation and the shedding of vortices was investigated for this airfoil. Two types of oscillation phenomena were found: one was exhibited by cases with angles of attack just above stall and one was exhibited by cases with higher angles of attack.
