Secondary succession: Composition of the vegetation and primary production in the field-to-forest at Brookhaven, Long Island, N.Y.

Description: Natural communities respond to disruption through a series of changes in plant and animal communities that are broadly predictable. The field-to-forest sere of central Long Island follows the pattern set forth earlier for the Piedmont of North Carolina and for New Jersey. The communities of herbs that occur in the years immediately after abandonment are followed by an Andropogon stage which is replaced before the 20th year by pine forest. The pine is replaced in the next 25 years by oak-pine, w… more

New computer technology to be applied to decision making process

Description: Much of what is presented here is indicative of our national trends in computing. To review and bring in the international scope at the same time, the following points are enumerated: 1. There are but few new ventures in the competition for the high performance end of the computer market. 2. The competition for the middle range of computers is very great internationally. 3. The number and varieties of minicomputers are growing at a phenomenal rate throughout the world. There is no question but … more

Analysis of a quench event in the 20-in. Nb--Ti magnet model constructed by G. Danby et al.

Description: Measurements of the voltage and currcnt that resulted from a quench of a superconducting magnet were studied and a simple computer model of this process was developed. Large layer-tolayer voltages were generated by the quench and methods reducing these were suggested and examined. (auth)

Preliminary neutron foil dosimetry characterization of the BLIP neutron facility

Description: The Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP) produces neutrons from 200 MeV proton bombardment of a transparent (relative to 200 MeV protons) Be target. Threshold foil dosimetry techniques were utilized to characterize the BLIP neutron spectra which includes neutrons with energies greater than 15 MeV. Some operational characteristics of spallation neutron sources were also determined. The derived BLIP neutron spectrum has a hard component (neutrons between 6 to q2 MeV which peaks at 8 to 9 MeV)… more

Reactor primary coolant system pipe rupture study. Progress report No. 29, January--June 1973

Description: The pipe rupture study is designed to extend the understanding of failure-causing mechanisms and to provide improved capability for evaluating reactor piping systems to minimize the probability of failures. Following a detailed review to determine the effort most needed to improve nuclear system piping (Phase I), analytical and experimental efforts (Phase II) were started in 1965. The recent accomplishments of a broad program in (a) fatigue studies through both bench-scale and large-component t… more

Polynomial solutions of the Schroedinger equation applied to photon cross sections in atoms

Description: Solutions of the Schrodinger equation with a realistic potential are carried out in detail. To check the methods, a few boundbound, bound-free, and free-free cross sections were calculated and values compared with existing calculations and experimental data. These comparisons, along with a listing of the computer code in its bound-free form, are included. (auth)

Computer applications in controlled thermonuclear research

Description: This report surveys those areas of plasma physics and controlled thermonuclear research in which computation has made significant contributions. Both fluid and particle models are considered, and applications to specific confinement experiments and plasma theory are discussed. (auth)

PALLOT: a FORTRAN code that produces graphical representations of nuclear blackout effects along a reentry trajectory

Description: The PALLOT code was developed to simplify the assimilation of data relating to effects of nuclear blackout on particular reentry trajectories. This code operates in three modes: azimuth, elevation, and inline, In the azimuth and elevation modes, the PALLOT picture represents a family of trajectories that only vary, respectively, in approach azimuth and impact elevation angle. The incline mode depicts a set of reentry vehicles approaching on the same trajectory through a nuclear environment. The… more

Lymph Node Clearance of Plutonium From Subcutaneous Wounds in Beagles

Description: The lymph node clearance of /sup 239/Pu O/sub 2/ administered as insoluble particles from subcutaneous implants was studied in adult beagles to simulate accidental contamination of hand wounds. External scintillation data were collected from the popliteal lymph nodes of each dog after 9.2 to 39.4 mu Ci of plutonium oxide was subcutaneously implanted into the left or right hind paws. The left hind paw was armputated 4 weeks after implantation to prevent continued deposition of plutonium oxide pa… more

Age estimates of stratospheric air

Description: It is shown that careful consideration of /sup 32/P//sup 7/Be ratios (both isotopes being generated in the atmosphere by cosmic radiation) not only yields information on the stratospheric or tropospheric origin of air masses. These ratios may also be used to determine the residence time in the stratosphere of tropospheric air that underwent upward transport through the tropopause and re-entered the troposphere at a later date. Lattice vibrations in noncrystalline solids

Description: The specific heat of noncrystalline solids differs from that predicted by the Debye model by amounts much larger than is known for crystalline solids. This deviation is most pronounced at temperatures below 1 deg K. Near 0.1 deg K. the experimental specific heat approaches a linear temperature dependence and is up to 30 times larger than predicted by the Debye model. This paper describes Brillouin scattering experiments, and also measurements of the thermal conductivity in thin glass fibers. Th… more

Description: A live-in type workshop available for academic credit covering basic nuclear power generation and the tradeoffs and problems that exist between nuclear power and alternative means to generate electricity was held for 37 high- school teachers at the Madison campus for the University of Wisconsin. Significant improvements over last year's program included the distribution of a large amount of information and the distribution of two minicourse outlines on the subject of power and the environment e… more

On-line computer facility and operating system COSACS at the ANL fast neutron generator

Description: An on-line/off-line computer system has been dnstalled at the ANL fast neutron generator (FNG) for on-line data acquisition and storage, and for off- line data reduction and evaluation. An operating system called COSACS has been written specifically for the installation. The present report describes all available hardware and software, but emphasizes those aspects of both that were tailored for this application. The various physicaldata channels, both input and output, are discussed with regard… more
