Laboratory Survey of Deoxidants for Uranium Chips

Description: Summary: "Six different types of solutions of various concentrations were used to deoxidize uranium chips on a laboratory scale. None of the solutions tested appears to be more desirable than 50% nitric acid for deoxidizing uranium chip on a production scale."

Corrosion of Redox Waste Storage Tank Construction Materials

Description: From introduction:"It was the aim of this investigation to determine the resistance of several materials of construction to current and anticipated and anticipated Hanford separation process waste streams under specific conditions. The corrosion rates of mild steel and austenitic stainless steel and the resistance of several commercial protective coatings were established."

Hanford Use of Experimental Water Filter Plant

Description: An improved method of water plant control has been developed at Hanford which employs a sensitive turbidiy measuring microphorometer and a model water filtration plant. The microphotometer operates on a light scattering principle and is accurate in the range of 0.0 to 0.1 parts per million turbidity. The model filter plant used is a five gallon per minute plant which can simulate the conditions normally occurring in the large water plants. It is the purpose of this report to describe the model … more

Mechanical Features of a Continuous Ion Exchange Unit

Description: This review covers: (a) The continuous countercurrent ion exchangers which have been described in the patent and/or technical literature. (b) Some of the other moving bed processes which are similar in mechanical arrangement to a continuous countercurrent ion exchange and which might have certain features adaptable to an ion exchange unit. (c) The auxiliary mechanical devices which are or may be used in an ion exchange apparatus.

Incontamination of Pig Skin Contaminated With a Plutonium Solution

Description: Different methods of decontaminating plutonium contaminated skin were studied by contamination localized areas of pig skin and then testing the different decontamination methods. Results indicate that the most effective of the decontamination methods tested involved the application of a plastic adherent material to the skin and its later removal by peeling.

A Study of Efficiencies and Pressure Drop Characteristics of Air-Filtering Media

Description: Removal of particles from air is discussed in terms of three classes of filtering media--air-sampling, respirator, and air-cleaning. Plots of efficiency versus filtering velocity are presented. The pressure drop characteristics of the filters are discussed in terms of initial pressure drops of the clean filters, variations in pressure drop of the individual filters, and comparison of loading rates.

The Use and Calibration of Scintillation Counter--Model Y

Description: Several improvements have been made in the gamma scintillation counter (GSC). The Model V gamma scintillation counter uses a canned thallium activated sodium iodide crystal as a detector. Although the electronic components remain unchanged, a modification of the sample support has been made to improve reproducibility of geometry. To assure comparable results between various counters, they must be operated at the same energy threshold and counting yield. Methods have been developed to assure… more

Diffusion of Stack Gases in Very Stable Atmospheres: Case II

Description: In 1949 Barad presented two solutions to the general diffusion equation. Basic in both solutions is the assumption that in very stable atmospheres a point source may be replaced by a vertical area of uniform concentration at a short distance downwind. This vertical area is considered to exist at the distance at which the plume finally "levels-off" and assumes a flat ribbon-like appearance. In addition if the distance over which diffusion takes place is limited to one or two miles and if only… more
