Some Preliminary Investigations in the Use of a Supersonic Mercury Vapor Jet for Providing an Energetic Neutral Beam

Description: Report discussing experiments conducted under the Livermore "Waldo" project to determine "(1) surface densities attainable in a supersonic mercury vapor jet stream, (2) the approximate efficiency of a mercury jet for neutralizing a proton beam, and (3) the mercury partial pressure contribution in the bore due to side streaming from the mercury jet."

Reactor gas loss analysis

Description: Reactor gas costs have increased substantially each year since 1952 when the total cost was $108,000. In 1953, 1954, and 1955 the gross annual cost of reactor gas was $126,000, $348,000 and $606,000 respectively and are reported in Figure 1. These continued increases in reactor gas costs indicate the need for an analysis of gas usage and formulation of a program to reduce gas consumption. To provide basic information for such a program, a critical review has been made of the reaction gas system… more

Venturi throat diameter and process tube connector cavitation analysis CG-654

Description: When a ``K`` type process tube is operated without a slug column, damage may take place in the connector because of the cavitation that originates in the venturi. Reported here is a study of this cavitation problem as related to CG-654 operating conditions. A series of curves were developed to present the effect of the venturi diameter on the venturi {Delta}P for instrument operation and on the cavitation problem at the higher flows which are experienced when the tube is operated without a slug… more

Justification for extending scram recovery time at C Reactor

Description: Slug ruptures at C Reactor are costing a considerable amount of production and are limiting reactor power levels. A large portion of this production is lost because the ``quickie`` procedure cannot be used with unstruck ruptures. Currently there are two reasons for this condition: Insufficient reactivity is available to recover after a rupture is removed with the ``quickie`` equipment, and if the ``quickie`` method were attempted, there would be many failures due to stuck rear caps and improper… more

Hindered Diphenoquinones: Diradicals of Oxygen

Description: Attempts were made to prepare a diphenoquinone having substituents in 2,2'-positions in order to prevent the planarity of the molecule and get a diradical of oxygen. The 2,2'-dimethyl-5,5'-di-t-butyldiphenoquinone was prepared and was shown to be in equilibrium with a small amount of diradical. This compound slowly polymerizes.
